um, no...?

If that's what you got out of this thread, there's something wrong.

What we're doing is shifting some of the non-guaranteed portions of these players contracts into guaranteed money and spreading out the cap hit over a longer period of time. We are increasing these players cap hits for 2014, 2015 and so on while trying to decrease the 2013 cap hit. So instead of cutting these players when they've outlived their usefulness in 2014 and moving on, we're faced with the decision of cutting the player when they're done and spending part of our cap towards their still-guaranteed money (dead money) or retaining a declining player on the roster.

Again, if the team believes said player will be here, then it isnt a big deal.

The problem would be to have too many guys who they gave the guaranteed money NEEDING to be cut at the same time, which is highly unlikely to happen.

So far, I think the only debatable new deal/restructuring they gave is the Ratliff one. He's struggled to stay healthy for a couple of years and had a really stupid off field incident this year, combined with an advanced age. And if somehow he stays healthy, he could make this one not look so bad because he does appear to be a great fit for this defensive scheme.

I dont know the details of what they di to Austin's contract.

I read they converted 3 mils for ratliff to guaranteed money.

That said, Austin IMO is likely to have a better year than Ratliff.

You mean like when the team thought Roy Williams (WR) Marion Barber, Marc Colombo, Terence Newman and Leonard Davis would be here for the entirety of their contracts? Those guys were part of $30.3 million of dead money on our cap number for last season... or a quarter of our adjusted cap number.

So far, I think the only debatable new deal/restructuring they gave is the Ratliff one. The problem is none of these moves look terrible when you make them. It's later that they look bad. I was glad we extended Newman and signed Davis. Not thrilled about MB3, Williams and Colombo though. And these guys weren't restructured contracts. They were FA signings and extensions.

You would think after being burned by guaranteed money in the past, the front office would start to say, hey, it's not always a great idea to give all this guaranteed money out... much less to make non-guaranteed money into guaranteed money.

This is my hands down my favorite thing about dbair.

I don't really know what they did, but it is OK!!!

I definately wish they could have found a way to move on from Rat, and tried to get younger there, and I would have been very open to the idea of trading Austin.

Although I understand why they'd be worried about doing so. If Dez goes down they'd be very very thin at the WR spot.

I dont know if its "ok". I said I didnt know the details of it, whereas I did know the details of Ratliff's restrcuture and wasnt very fond of it because of his age, recent injury history and stupid DWI

Even though Austin has struggled to stay healthy the past couple years, its likely IMO that he has more upside than Ratliff does if he does manage to stay healthy.

Could go either way with both of them. If both are healthy they could be very producitve. If both struggle to stay healthy, they'll be gone after this season IMO.
