Both Yim and Dooms are right, but for differing reasons. I agree that these high prices are artificially created to push the country towards the religious of green energy. The market for gas alternatives was artificially created and we don't have the technology to make it sustainable. At the end of the day, it's just a way for people to get rich.
But I also don't see a future where we are so dependent on fuel. Prior to our energy independence, we were held hostage by OPEC. Now it's the Russians and the Chinese for other goods. I don't think we should be reliant on other countries for every day necessities such as food and fuel.
But we need to look and develop alternatives. Right now, solar is just not economically viable. An electric car is not economically viable either. But finding a way to heat a home or run your appliances with an inexpensive energy source is appealing.
