@nickeatman: I said hours ... I didnt say how many hours!

How the fuck can anyone say that when a 9-7 Giants team that barely won the division over us in 2011 ended up winning the Super Bowl? Or the fact that we again got into the final game of the season this past year 9despite being crippled by injuries) and had a chance to win the division again?

I really cant argue with this, although I can see both sides. I've been roasted on here by a few people though for supporting what you just said, that perhaps its time to move on from Romo, free the cap space now (and the future) and get a really good package of picks in return for him.

I hate the giants comparisons...we dont have the leadership or management they had when they went on their runs.

It means nothing if we still have Jerry Jones running the team. He'll still waste draft picks and overspend on questionable free agents.

Romo gives us a chance to win despite all of this team's handicaps. Dumping Romo and going with whatever Quarterback Jerry has decided is "the future" is a scary proposition.

Yea true..jerry cant evaluate qbs for shit.

Could be almost anything. Depends on how its structured. if you took a basic guess at it and assumed the 30 guaranteed was spread out over the entire 4 yrs, that'd be 7.5 mils per season just to cover that. he probably has minimal base salaries so probably worst case scenario is new cap charge would be somewhere around 8-9 mils, saving 7 or so immediately for us.

Its possible it could be structured with guaranteed money being paid in future years too though, meaning his cap charge this year could be much less than 8-9 mils.

What about the money that has been previously restructured and is slotted for this year? That 5.5M or so doesn't just go away does it?

Seems like teams could just scheme the hell out of the system if it did.

I don't think the savings will be as great as expected.

4 years - 68 million - 30 guaranteed

Romo's cap hit is currently $16,818,833.

If the rumored numbers are true, it could look something like:

Signing Bonus of $24M
2013 Base $6M + prorated bonus $6M = $12M cap hit in 2013 *frees up $4,818,833 in immediate cap room.
($24 M bonus + first year base of $6M = reported $30M guaranteed)
2014 Base $10M
2015 Base $13M
2016 Base $15M

or they could put guaranteed money into the 2nd year of his deal (becoming more and more popular)
Signing Bonus of $20M
2013 Base $5M + prorated bonus $5M = $10M cap hit in 2013*frees up $6,818,833 in immediate cap room
and then $5M of whatever his 2014 base is guaranteed.

These numbers are just guesses but there is a chance to free up some significant cap room. Enough to sign 5 or 6 Will Allen's.

How many years did they invest in those guys, total?

Garrett was high on Dalton and Kaepernick. I will give him credit for that. Jerry doesn't have a clue and I hope that Garrett will be the oone to pick out the next QB. Either one of these QBs would have allowed the team to move past Romo. They would have been cheaper, younger and allowed a Romo trade. As things stand now, Jerry is hanging on to a core group of aging players that has proved nothing. Between the aging core, Romo, the salary cap, etc. the future is not bright. I see some more Campo years ahead. Jerry will not accept that these older core players had their shot and came up short. They are not going to get any better at this point, but he is still banking on them, which is a mistake.

A lot of conflicting reports out there, and by reputable guys for the most part.

Not sure what to believe.

Still nothing about this aspect?

Just for shits and giggles, a 30M guarantee on 4 years would mean his cap hit starts at 13M.

7.5M for the new shit, 5.3M (or abouts I believe) for the old contract. So if the old stuff carries through there is hardly any cap relief.

Romo's cap number this year is $11,500,000 base + $5,318,833 pro-rated restructuring bonus = $16,818,833 total cap hit.

They key with the restructure is to bring down that $11.5M base, way down in Romo's case, to make cap room.

For example, Ware's 2013 base was just reduced to $840k, Witten to $940k, Carr to $750k, etc.

even using your numbers, which I don't think will be what they actually end up being, creates about $4 million in cap room.

Well, $3M after base salary.

That's a far cry from the $8M some were speculating.

Furthermore, that's considering a scenario where the team effectively backloads the piss out of the contract.

Lets say it was the reported 4 years, $68M with $30M guaranteed.

With vet minimum, that means there's $37M in base salary that has to be paid after year 1. $12M per year or abouts. Add in the $7.5M bonus that would be prorated (provided they even spread it out evenly and didn't opt for more money now by distributing the bonus however they see fit) and we're talking about 19.5M in cap hits starting 2014 and lasting through 2016. That's only if they equally spread the base salary.

They couldn't cut him after 1 year because there'd be like $22M in dead money. There'd be $15M for cutting him after year two and you can't get the play he can give you for the difference.

That means Dallas takes 2 years of $20M in cap hits for Romo before they can consider cutting him and even if they cut him prior to year 4 they would have $7.5M in dead money.

Basically, no matter what Dallas will have a shitty contract with Romo to deal with if they want cap relief this year and try to work his numbers into the deal. They already have to account for the past reworked deals and trying to get relief while accounting for the new signing bonus and previous stuff is almost impossible unless they completely mortgage the future.

Under the assumed deal that is.
