Derrius Guice rushed 11 times for 44 yards in the Redskins' third preseason game, adding a four-yard reception on his lone target.

Guice appeared to have the first touchdown of his professional career late in the first half, but it was called back by an Ereck Flowers penalty at left guard. Go figure. Guice skied over the pile for the six that didn't count. Guice did not look like a player knocking off rust. He showed excellent vision on his first (eight-yard carry) while mixing in some power. Adrian Peterson figures to get the Redskins' Week 1 "start," but Guice will be involved from the jump. If he can stay on the field, he could overtake AD in short order.

Drew Lock (thumb) could begin the season on injured reserve.

"Obviously because it's his throwing hand and a thumb, that's a pretty serious injury for a quarterback,'' coach Vic Fangio said Thursday. "It will be some time before we know exactly where he's at and how much time he would miss." If the move is made, it will not be until after final cuts. Placing Lock on injured reserve now would make him ineligible for return. This is likely to happen and to function as a de facto "redshirt" for the raw rookie quarterback. Joe Flacco will almost certainly be benchable in 2019, but Lock might not have enough time to get ready to unseat him.

NBC Sports' Tom Curren reports Patriots SS Pat Chung was cited for cocaine possession.

The alleged incident occurred in late July, and he'll face an arraignment next Wednesday, which is just over a week before the regular season. There are obviously potential consequences here, including suspension, but they'll probably wait until after the legal process plays out before moving on that front. Chung signed a one-year extension with the Patriots this season after continuing to play well into his 30s.

Bengals undrafted rookie WR Damion Willis started Thursday's third preseason game and caught 3-of-6 targets for 55 yards and one touchdown.

Willis is an UDFA out of Troy who stands 6'3/201 and ran a 4.51 forty at his Pro Day. He's been a camp standout in Cincinnati and got the nod with the Andy Dalton group next to Tyler Boyd with A.J. Green nursing his ankle injury. Willis made a dazzling 33-yard grab over the top of Janoris Jenkins, fighting off defensive pass interference. He stayed in the game with the second- and third-team offenses before later catching a touchdown from No. 3 QB Jake Dolegala. Willis could have an early-season role in three-wide sets alongside Boyd and John Ross.

Equanimeous St. Brown will miss 4-6 weeks with a high-ankle sprain.

His X-rays came back negative, though obviously he's still going to miss time. All things considered, this is better news than anticipated for St. Brown, whose injury Thursday night had the look of a season-ender. With St. Brown shelved for at least the first month, Jake Kumerow should be in line for the No. 4 receiver role behind Green Bay's starting trio of Davante Adams, Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Geronimo Allison.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport confirms Jordan Reed has been placed in the league's concussion protocol.

He suffered the injury on a colossal hit from Falcons safety Keanu Neal in Thursday's exhibition game. This is Reed's seventh reported concussion. With two weeks to go until Week 1, Reed—who was looking like a value at his 13th round ADP—the oft-injured tight end should be considered questionable bordering on doubtful for Washington's season opener at Philadelphia. His absence would leave the Redskins extremely thin on receiving weapons. Vernon Davis is next up on the tight end depth chart for Washington.

Andrew Luck from the Colts just retired

I sure didn’t see that one coming. But with how many injuries he has had it makes sense

Me neither, I really thought he was going to be one of the next great QBs

Have they said why?

The Athletic's Ben Standig reports the Redskins want to trade contract-year WR Josh Doctson prior to Week 1.

Doctson being in the final year of his deal and his inability to play special teams is working against him as roster cuts loom. The problem for the Redskins is Doctson's due a guaranteed $1.2 million salary and another $1.377 million in bonuses this season. Washington would save just over $620K by cutting Doctson. He'd bring back nothing more than a late-round pick in a trade. The Redskins have used a number of draft picks on wideouts since taking Doctson No. 22 overall in 2016.

Free agent Brock Osweiler visited the Colts Tuesday.

The Colts are in the market for a backup after the sudden retirement of Andrew Luck pushed Jacoby Brissett into the starting job. Chad Kelly is suspended to open the season, leaving Phillip Walker as the only current option on the depth chart to back up Brissett. Osweiler had some moments with the Dolphins last season but has drawn zero interest on the market since the end of the year.

Updating a previous item, ESPN's Eric Williams said it's "just a hunch" that he expects Melvin Gordon to end his holdout in time for Week 1.

In his latest 53-man roster projection for the Chargers, Williams wrote that he "expects" Gordon to end his holdout in time for the season opener. Williams left it at that and failed to expand on the statement. When pressed on Twitter, Williams stated it was "just a hunch" based on the fact Gordon would be forfeiting hundreds of thousands of dollars in game checks if he starts missing real action. It's been quiet on the Gordon front. Talks don't seem to be any closer, however.

NFL Network's Tiffany Blackmon reports Panthers K Graham Gano could begin the year on injured reserve with a knee injury.

Per Blackmon, Gano's knee issue "doesn’t seem to be getting better," and the Panthers are considering being proactive with an IR replacement with an eye toward getting Gano back for the second half of the season. The Panthers' kicker since 2012, Gano missed four games last season with a knee issue. Gano has made 93.5 percent of his field goal attempts over the past two years. It wouldn't be a trivial loss.

Dolphins released WR Brice Butler.

Butler saw heavy snaps during the preseason but squandered his opportunity, managing a tepid 7-69-0 receiving line with one drop on 11 targets. Blessed with 4.42 wheels, Butler has the makeup of a vertical threat, though the 2013 seventh-rounder has spent the bulk of his career as a scarcely-used backup.

Eagles released CB Orlando Scandrick.

It's a mild surprise, but also an indication of the Eagles' improved health in the secondary. Now 32, Scandrick didn't embarrass himself for the Chiefs last season. He'll get workouts.

Broncos released OL Chaz Green.

It's the second time Green has been pink-slipped in the past three months. Green only appeared in one game last year, drawing a start for the Raiders in place of injured LG Kelechi Osemele. The former Florida Gator is quickly running out of NFL chances.

Bills released CB Captain Munnerlyn.

Munnerlyn has strong ties with Sean McDermott, so it's a bad sign he couldn't make the team. There's not going to be much of a market for Munnerlyn after he struggled for interest this offseason. Munnerlyn will likely have to wait until after Week 1 to get another look, when veteran salaries aren't guaranteed.

I've seen a lot of this kid the past two preseasons. He's not a full time NFL starter by any means, but I'd take him over the shit we've got backing up Dak right now...

Vikings waived QB Kyle Sloter.

The Vikings are supposedly trying to trade their No. 3 quarterback. Best of luck. The third-year UDFA did have an excellent summer, completing 39-of-51 passes (76.5 percent) for 443 yards (8.7 YPA), four touchdowns and one interception. Sean Mannion will back up Kirk Cousins.
