A.J. McCarron is expected to miss the entire preseason after injuring his right throwing thumb in Tuesday's practice.

McCarron was hurt on a follow-through when his thumb banged against a helmet. The Texans have Joe Webb behind Deshaun Watson, but they'll need to sign another quarterback to make it through the summer. Brandon Weeden has already been floated as a potential solution.

The Washington Post reports third-round Redskins WR Terry McLaurin has been "showered with praise from coaches and teammates" in training camp.

Per reporter Kareem Copeland, McLaurin has "consistently made plays." A speed demon — McLaurin clocked a 4.35 40 at the Combine — McLaurin has so far displayed strong hands. Copeland bills him as an "intellectual player" trying to learn all three receiver spots. There are snaps and targets for the taking in Washington's bombed-out receiver corps. McLaurin will also be playing with his college quarterback, Dwayne Haskins, as a rookie.

Eagles No. 2 QB Nate Sudfeld was forced from Thursday's preseason opener with a left wrist injury.

Sudfeld's non-throwing arm bent awkwardly as he was bracing himself for a fall. Cody Kessler is the Eagles' No. 3. Sudfeld had completed 10-of-18 passes for 177 yards and a score before going down. Were Sudfeld to miss regular season time, the Eagles would have to think long and hard about upgrading Kessler.

Keke Coutee was forced from Thursday's preseason game with a right leg injury.

Coutee was in a "lot of pain" before attempting to get up and failing. He had to be helped off the field with the assistance of trainers. The second-year pro was limited to six rookie appearances as he dealt with season-long hamstring woes. The Texans have zero depth behind Coutee. This would be a consequential injury. Coutee is currently being drafted on the WR4/5 borderline.

This was gruesome looking...

Jermaine Kearse has been diagnosed with a broken left leg and "assorted injuries to his ankle."

It's the worst possible news but not surprising after the way Kearse went down. The 29-year-old's 2019 is over. Kearse had been fighting for No. 4 duties in the Lions' run-first offense. The Lions have little of note behind Kenny Golladay, Marvin Jones and Danny Amendola. Coming off a dismal 2018 where he averaged just 10.0 yards on 37 catches as a Jet, Kearse's NFL career is winding down. This injury could sadly force him out of the league.

Texans acquired Duke Johnson from the Browns in exchange for a conditional 2020 fourth-round pick.

NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reports the pick can become a third-rounder. The Browns had been adamant they would keep Johnson on the roster at least during Kareem Hunt's suspension, but the running back finally got the trade he has been after for months. In Houston, Johnson will slot in as the No. 2 back behind Lamar Miller. Given Miller's mediocrity to this point in his Texans career, there is a path for Johnson to be even more than that if he shows well. This trade is a boost to Johnson's fantasy value.

Kyler Murray looked good in his preseason debut. I want to see him against a full NFL defense and getting hit before I buy in, but it was definitely a good way to start out.

surprising, he seems WAY too small to be an NFL QB, Doug Flutie must be rolling over in his non-grave

I'm still trying to decide if the nonstarters were a factor, and/or if it was a byproduct of Kingsbury's offense. We'll know once the games count, but like I said, so far so good.

According to George Bremer of the Herald Bulletin, the Colts remain "confident and optimistic" Andrew Luck (calf) will be ready for Week 1 against the Chargers.

That's been the company line for the Colts all offseason, though we're going on three months of hearing about Luck's calf with barely any mention of progress. Coach Frank Reich confirmed that Luck will be held out at least through the team's off day on Tuesday and admitted that the franchise quarterback is still dealing with a "degree of pain" in his injured calf. It seems the Colts are recycling many of the same lines they recited two years ago when Luck's balky shoulder kept him out for all of 2017. A notoriously slow healer, Luck's Week 1 status can no longer be taken for granted.

Nate Sudfeld is expected to miss six weeks after undergoing wrist surgery Friday morning.

Sudfeld broke his left (non-throwing) wrist in Thursday's exhibition opener against Tennessee. With Sudfeld on the shelf, look for Cody Kessler to begin the year holding the clipboard for starter Carson Wentz.

Speaking after Daniel Jones' perfect preseason debut Thursday night, coach Pat Shurmur advised fans to "slow your roll" on a potential quarterback controversy.

Eli Manning got the start against the Jets in the exhibition opener, going 1-of-1 for three yards before the offense was booed off the field following a three-and-out. Jones was next up on the team's second series, and the No. 6 overall pick was a perfect 5-of-5 for 67 yards and capped it off with a touchdown pass to Bennie Fowler in the red zone. The media has gone hysterical in its praises of Jones, but Shurmur is right. Jones is very likely better than Manning at this stage of their respective careers, but it was one drive and then he sat the rest of the game. If Jones continues this the remainder of the preseason, however, it'll be tough to "slow your roll." Jones is bound to make year-one starts.

Wayne Gallman suffered a foot strain in the Giants' preseason opener.

Gallman avoided structural damage, but he's going to miss some practice time. It's a concerning injury for a player on the bubble. The Giants had been using Gallman as the No. 3 back behind Saquon Barkley and Paul Perkins, but this is a hit to his roster chances.

Giants first-round CB Deandre Baker will undergo an MRI on his injured knee.

The rookie "felt something" during Sunday's warmups, which prompted the MRI. That's all that is known right now, so it appears the Giants will simply have to wait this one out. Selected 30th overall in April's draft, the former Georgia standout had been hoping to carve a role opposite Janoris Jenkins in the Giants' secondary.

Bears coach Matt Nagy said Anthony Miller is dealing with a sprained ankle.

It's unclear when the injury occurred, though Miller wasn't present for Sunday's practice. Nagy doesn't believe the injury will cost Miller any regular-season time, which would suggest his sprain is of the "low-ankle" variety. Despite relatively little fanfare, Miller quietly ranked second among rookies with seven touchdown receptions last year, which also led his team. He could make a sophomore leap, health permitting.

Theo Riddick will miss 6-8 weeks with a fractured shoulder.

Riddick reportedly won't need surgery. It's a tough blow for the veteran receiving back, who joined the Broncos last week following a six-year stint in Detroit. Despite it being just a "slight" fracture, the injury will still cost Riddick a minimum of 2-4 regular season games. Devontae Booker's once-slim roster odds are looking much better with Riddick on the shelf.

Jets K Chandler Catanzaro announced his retirement after five NFL seasons.

Catanzaro likely saw the writing on the wall, beating the Jets to the punch by retiring before they had a chance to cut him. The former Clemson Tiger was dreadful in New York's preseason opener Thursday night, misfiring on two of his three extra-points in a loss to the Giants. Catanzaro had some good years in Arizona but has been a journeyman of late, spending time with four organizations since 2016. Assuming his career is actually over, he'll finish his five-year NFL tenure with 119 field goals on 142 attempts (83.8 percent) with a long of 60 yards. In his stead, the Jets have signed Taylor Bertolet, who went to training camp with New York last summer before latching on with the Salt Lake Stallions of the now defunct AAF.

Aaron Jones (hamstring) returned to practice.

Jones missed nine days with a hamstring strain. Returning to practice is a great sign for Jones, who needs to stay healthy after missing time the last two seasons. Jones should be cleared for Green Bay's second preseason game.
