As a young boy I remember total lack of AC in schools and homes. We had a swamp cooler only, at home. TG&Y was air conditioned along with theaters, and some other places. I've sat in classrooms while it was 105 outside and no cooler at all, inside.

One day someone threw a switch and suddenly AC began to infiltrate everything, and by 1976 we were living in a home with "central heat and air" and only the schools themselves hadn't quite caught the AC bug. But by 1980, almost all had.

Today it's uncommon to see anything without AC.

Almost like it's a good idea.
I still remember most houses had attic fans.

Those things were awesome. Flip the switch and air moved bigtime. Open some windows and then watch/hear doors throughout the house slam shut.

Of course we spent all spring/summer daylight time outside either in the big tree house I'd built or swimming in the stock tank under the windmill. A hike to the creek a few miles away playing "bounty hunter" which was hide and seek using pellet pistols and air rifles lol. Small canyons and arroyos were great bushwhacker spots. Come the cooler evening it was football with all the area farm kids too.
