It makes sense to skip if you're a lock to be one of the 1st QBs taken, but not in Geno's case.

Lax, here is the explanation.

First non-seniors to compete in Senior Bowl

CBSSports.com wire reports
Jan. 19, 2013 5:59 PM ET

MOBILE, Ala. -- The NFL has cleared two non-seniors to compete in the Senior Bowl for the first time, opening the door to a wider pool of draft prospects for future games.

Senior Bowl executive director Phil Savage said Saturday that fourth-year junior offensive linemen D.J. Fluker of Alabama and Justin Pugh of Syracuse received that clearance. Both have graduated.

"This is a breakthrough moment for the Senior Bowl game because the league allowed us to bring in these two players who graduated in December and were on campus for four years and their coach supported their candidacy for the Senior Bowl," said Savage, a former Cleveland Browns general manager. "The reason we wanted to do this was because in the past there have been a number of fourth-year juniors who had graduated who were not allowed to play in the Senior Bowl."

Savage said players who would have qualified last year included Baylor's Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Robert Griffin III and Alabama All-America linebacker Dont'a Hightower. Both were first-round draft picks.

"It would have certainly made the Senior Bowl potentially a better game," Savage said. "It would have given those players an opportunity to not only be rewarded but have an extra evaluating period for NFL scouts."

He said the Senior Bowl isn't interesting in admitting third-year juniors, or early draft entries who haven't graduated.

Savage said the Senior Bowl approached the NFL last June "about possibly breaking new ground" and then went back to the league with a small group of candidates for the game.

He said the NFL granted permission to include Fluker and Pugh this week.

Fluker was a second-team All-American right tackle who helped the Crimson Tide to two straight national titles. He played for nearby Foley High School, but is nursing a calf injury and won't play.

Pugh started every game he played at Syracuse and was an All-Big East selection the past two seasons. He'll play with his former quarterback, Ryan Nassib, on the North squad.

"We felt like that we put a lot of time and energy into getting this done and he was deserving of the recognition of being one of this duo of players that will always be remembers as the first two juniors," he said.

The complete Senior Bowl rosters can be found here.

2013 Senior Bowl: Monday's measurements

By Dave Richard | Senior Fantasy Writer
January 21, 2013 12:53 pm ET

When the draft process is over, every team will have several fresh faces and new names. But until then, everyone is just a name and a number.

Before Senior Bowl practices kicked in on Monday, players weighed in and were measured in front of hundreds of league executives. For those interested, below are those numbers.

Note the style for height, a four-number "code" that's pretty easy to understand. The first number represents feet, the second two numbers represent inches, and the last number represents the fraction of an inch. So someone who has a number 6034 is 6-foot-3 and four-eighths inches, or one-half inch. A player with a 6000 is an even six feet tall.

Broaddus: Reporting From First Day Of Senior Bowl In Mobile

Posted 1 hour ago

MOBILE, Ala. - On the first official day of the Senior Bowl, the scouts and coaches gathered for the weigh in at the Mobile Convention Center. This is the first of many opportunities that the clubs will have to interact with the players as they prepare for the April 26th NFL Draft. What is outstanding about these practices is that the scouts will have to chance to see these players work with NFL staffs coaching the teams. The Oakland Raiders will be working with the North squad while the Detroit Lions will be with the South. For those staffs, coaching these players gives them a unique advantage because they get to interact with the players not only on the field but in meeting settings as well. These staffs will really find out what makes these players tick in what they can and cannot handle.

The Senior Bowl has always been the who’s who of the college football crop but there are several notable players that decided not to be a part of the game. Players that took a pass on the opportunity to work for the teams were Monte Ball of Wisconsin, Star Lotulelei of Utah, Geno Smith of West Virginia, Manti Te’o of Notre Dame, Kenny Vacaro of Texas and Chance Warmack of Alabama. Other will miss the game because of injury, Matt Barkley of USC and Jesse Williams of Alabama.

Players that are here that I plan to keep my eye on are quarterbacks Zac Dysert, Mike Glennon and Ryan Nassib all will playing on the North squad. Braxton Cave and Eric Fisher offensive linemen, Margus Hunt, Alex Okafor and Brnadon Short on the defensive line. Already hearing some whispers about safety TJ McDonald as well so will study his week. On the South squad, Landry Jones, Tyler Wilson and EJ Manuel are the quarterbacks. DJ Flukar is a massive tackle that weighed in at 355, guard Larry Warford was down 10 pounds from his playing weight of 343 and looks like he is in good shape. Ezekial Ansah is on the South team as well and missed the weigh in this morning because he was still at the doctor’s office so keep an eye on that.

Just from my early draft looks, it appears that the South squad has the better of the offensive line with Fluker, Lane Johnson, JC Tretter and Warford. Brandon Cave and Eric Fisher are the best guys on the North side but it always seems to work out where there are one or two players that catch the scout’s eye and causes them to have to go back and relook at their reports. Several years ago there was a player named Mitch Marrow from Penn that set the Senior Bowl on fire as a defensive end. The Carolina Panthers drafted him in the 3rd round only to have him injury his back and never play again. You have to really be careful of the risers and fallers here at the Senior Bowl and understand it is one part of the process.

CMD probably homer creaming pants over TJ McDonald news

what's funny is I was just about to post something on this.

Kiffin is supposedly making a case for TJ, advised scouts and Jerome Henderson to go back and look at more tape of him.

If he thinks he can be an upgrade back there, so be it.

Seems like a possible round two target as well, which means we'd be free to use our round one pick on OL/DL and probably still end up with two starters in first two picks.

Whats your opinion on him CMD? And if you think he is anything like Taylor "makes no plays" Mays then dont bother. lol

Larry Warford/Kentucky was dominant on 1-on-1. Once he got his hands on opponents game over.

He's not worth a 1st or even a 2nd rounder.
