I've been seeing a lot of comparisons to the Israeli and Ukraine wars. People are saying we shouldn't support either war. But let me make an important distinction between the two. Israel has been a long term ally of ours. Israel is like Britain, or Japan. If either of those countries needed us we would be there for them. We help Taiwan a lot too and if they go to war with China, guess who is obligated to help them?
But let's be clear, being an ally does not mean they have to do what is in our best interests. They do what is in theirs first. Again, that would be true of any ally of ours. Some exercise that right more than others, like France and Germany, but Israel has helped us out by not retaliating on several occasions, not the least of which was when Iraq was sending Scud missiles into their country and we asked then to not retaliate and disrupt the delicate coalition with Arab countries.
Ukraine on the other hand has never been an "ally" of the US. We have had friendly relations with them but we have not had any defense treaties with them. In fact we have always considered them to be a hyper corrupt country that we tolerate . We have no obligation to support their war.
