...And this is 2022's first preseason game thread!

Dallas at Denver.

For some goofy reason we're in our blue jerseys and they're in their red ones.

This offense couldn't possibly look more horrid. I've been watching NFL preseason games all day and this is the first really terrible looking O.

You MIGHT win 5 games if you're averaging the penalties/yards we've seen tonight. We're crap. Sloppy, undisciplined. Horrible looking.

Gentlemen, the idea is not to play hard to impress and make the team....the idea is that we're deep at every position and we don't need to get hurt. This is Dallas.....

I originally forgot the game was on last night.

When I finally remembered about the game I switched over to the NFL network just in time to see Cooper Rush throw an INT. I just kept on flipping through channels to to find something decent to watch.

I recorded it and watched a bit last night. Watching the Cowboys is like watching a team with a different sense of urgency and intensity. Jimmy was right, it's a country club atmosphere and it plays out year after year, regardless of coach.

I saw an article from one of the beat writers about the game. Apparently is was a repeat of last years playoff loss to the Niners with all the penalties.

MM said in the off season that cleaning up the penalties was going to be a major focus.

Apparently not!

You can't clean up attitude and effort, or lack thereof, which leads to penalties, when the top of the organization promotes that attitude. It was different with Parcells because the players knew Parcells had a heavy hand in their professional future. Drew Henson would still be here had it not been for BP and and he would have been a long term player here.

Cooper Rush winning that Minny game last year was unfortunate. Now Jerry thinks we're set at that position.

I watched the game, the penalties were ridiculous. The crew called 25 accepted penalties and 17 of them were against us. While plenty were warranted, this crew also made a number of just mind numbingly lousy calls. Tyler Smith got flagged for holding twice, one was clearly a hold, the other it appeared the guy he was supposed to be blocking basically fell down. Sam Williams was called for an obscene roughing the passer call. On our 1st offensive series their DB made obvious contact downfield beyond 5 yds, ball was thrown a flag came out. After a meeting, refs picked up the flag. On Broncos 1st series, CB Nashon Wright made a play o the ball and had some contact but made a nice interception, refs threw a flag and took away the pick.

Some of my other observations:

1) For all the talk about how the Broncos "dominated us" physically in the joint practice Thursday, it didnt really show up the other night in the game. Our run game was pretty good w with 28 carries, 141 yds and a 5.0 avg. The rushing totals weren't skewed either by one or two long runs. They got a consistent push and had 3-5-7 yd gains fairly consistently.

2) Conversely, our run defense was outstanding, holding the Broncos to 39 yds on 22 carries (less than 2.0 yds per carry)

3) Pass defense was not good and we had no sacks, although there was some fairly decent pressure at times.

4) In terms of the rookies, Tyler Smith had the noted two holding calls above, but his blocking otherwise appeared really good and he had a couple plays where he drove his guy 5 yds or more downfield. I didnt see him beaten on any pass rush plays either. 2nd rd pick Sam Williams had a couple of good pressures and had the bogus roughing the passer call. Jalen Tolbert started and had two short catches for 10 yds, and also drew one PI on a throw downfield. TE Jake Ferguson was outstanding and looks like a real player. Caught 3 balls for 29 yds and looked really fluid in his routes and RAC, but also displayed some really good run blocking. CB Daron Bland also really showed well and may be moving up the depth charts after his strong training camp and excellent game the other night.

5) The backup QB position did not look good. Cooper Rush was pretty awful at times and Ben Dinucci actually outplayed him IMO. Will Grier, who by most accounts has clearly outplayed Rush was not able to play due a groin injury. Hopefully he can play next week.

6) C battle looks to be ongoing, with Biadasz starting ans doing ok, backed up by Matt Farniok who I thought played well, and he also got reps at LG. Rookie Alec Lindstrom was doing some nice things too but I think he got hurt towards the end of the game and Farniok came back in. Kavonte Turpin had one decent punt return (10 yds) but stupidly fair caught one where it appeared he had plenty of room.

7) ST were not very good. Hahrullahha missed his only FG attempt. Maher made his only PAT attempt, but our punter had one partially blocked and Kelvin Joseph had the typical stupid type of penalty we have seen plague this team for years. Going offsides on a FG attempt that was missed, it was re-kicked and of course the guy made it. Cowboys also had a couple other ST penalties.

Overall, more bad or mediocre than good but hardly any starters played (Neville Gallimore started at DT and looked really good, Tyler Smith started at LG and Biadasz started at C). Gotta clean up a lot of stuff and probably will be looking to address backup QB, backup RT/LT (Josh Bell didnt have a very impressive game) and probably Kicker for sure.

The Online really sucks ass.
They ran for 141 yds on 28 carries and most of the runs were 3-5-7 yds. They really didnt have any long runs to skew the numbers.

They actually got a pretty good push on a lo of the plays.

Now the penalties are a real problem.

No doubt too many penalties, but if refs are going to call our games like they did vs Denver, they absolutely wont win more than 5 or 6 games. Some of those calls were utter garbage.

I don't think so. By most accounts Grier is outperforming him and they were splitting the 2nd team reps before Grier injured his groin a few days ago.

Will be interesting to see how many reps Grier gets this weekend (if he's healthy enough to play)

Eh.

As I have said a bunch of times, I loved that Parcells changed the thinking around the scouting for the team, but he was a mediocre game day coach here and he had more than his fair share of personnel blunders too.

If it were up to him, we'd likely have never gotten Demarcus Ware because he thought Marcus Speaks was the far more important piece to his defense. And almost none of those FOB's he signed amounted to anything other than wasted space.

Was super excited when we got him, but ultimately to me he was a huge letdown and appeared to be there just for the money more than anything else.
