My wife and I went to Cancun with her best friend in 2022. Even then it was getting to where you basically could not leave the resort area.

We took two trips to different Mayan places, including Chichen Itza (which was 2-3 hour drive by bus). We watched them load an obvious cargo box of weapons as part of their gear for the tour. We saw a bunch of seedy looking stuff and amongst several of us tourists we guessed it wasn't going to be long before they had to shut down a lot of those guided tours due to the Cartels. Sure enough within the year we saw that a number of them had been canceled and to my knowledge many haven't been restarted since.

I'll never go back and fortunately my wife has no desire to go either.
