You can already see signs of what will happen if/when socialists take over. Three things every socialist government does when it takes control of a country. 1. fair elections go out the window. Socialists know that over time they will fail so to remain in power they must rig elections or hold fake elections. Alternatively, they cancel all elections. Socialism always has a ruling class that craves power and wealth. This was the central lesson of Orwell's 1984. Once in power, they will do anything to remain in power. The Term "Democratic Socialist" itself is a lie. There can be no Democracy in a socialist country because the people will eventually vote to end socialism.
2. The silence dissent by any means necessary. Every time. Cuba, Venezuela, Vietnam, China. Name the communist country and anyone who dissents is jail, murdered or "disappeared". Every time. You can already hear this in the voices of the Democratic Socialists who talk about those who will not get on board. Things like "boomers need to die already", are a way of saying dissent must be eliminated. Again, as in 1, if there is a Democracy then dissent cannot be allowed because it could lead to a move to vote out the socialist ruling class.
The 3rd thing is failure. Socialism always fails. From ancient Rome when free bread was handed out to Roman citizens daily, to the takeover of Venezuela in more recent history. Socialism leads to apathy and eventually productions slows to the point the government cannot function. Some governments turn to Capitalism to try to remain solvent but that has limited success.
