has it existed in our life time or ever? I've heard the phrase but never paid much attention to politics until the last few years and almost everything I see is a complete shit show, primarily from the dems

Much moreso than today. The dems of that era and prior had much fewer crazies and kept the few they had under wraps and powerless. Also - they had super majority power for decades prior to that. It's when they started losing control of congress and losing power that we saw the nutters in the D, multiply.
