Thomas Davis was drafted as an undersized LB, then moved to safety and converted to a LB in his rookie year. He was a little undersized but his main skillset was flying to the ball more than managing the moving parts of the secondary. Fact is, Thomas Davis is a very good athlete who has been given the best chance for him to simply play each game as a round peg in a round hole.
Dallas has a few players who are currently round pegs could fill round holes but the Jason Garrett player development program is an empty brick building with a locked door and an undisclosed location. So, in my opinion, the following players are in the wrong position and could be filling a better need with much greater success if the Garrett drain-trust would see the potential and put in the time.
LB Bruce Carter. (Assumed re-signed). Move to DE. Can shed blocks, is very fast, can be a nightmare to a ball crossing the LOS. Will not need to cover anyone but an occasional outside route in the flat for a TE or FB.
FS: JJ Wilcox: Move to WLB. Violently and hastily flies to the ball. Does not need to cover as much as find the ball. Wilcox has no business being in a thinking role or even a role that requires him to cover a great deal of options and zones. The Marinelli WLB flows to the ball on every snap. Wilcox should have that role.
LB Kyle Wilber: Move to DE. Watched a lot of Wilber. I think he is just a very good straight line player, he doesn't maven laterally well and he certainly doesn't change direction well like LBs need to do. But if Dallas gives Wilber the chance at DE and train him to simply get into the backfield (like Marinellis DL is supposed to), he will resemble the highlight reel that he had coming out of Wake Forest. Reminds me of Mike Vrabel, but because Dallas is not a 3-4, Wilber should just rush as a DE. Wilber could fill a rotational need right now at DE, but he's just not a dexterous enough athlete to be a dynamic and starting LB.
CB Mo Claiborne. Move to FS. Tracks the ball in the air well. Needs only intermediate coverage skills and needs speed and range to be in a position to stop the ball whether in the air on on the ground. Not the most physical player but is certainly more gifted than JJ Wilcox in the secondary.
