The business of Thomas Davis

Thomas Davis was drafted as an undersized LB, then moved to safety and converted to a LB in his rookie year. He was a little undersized but his main skillset was flying to the ball more than managing the moving parts of the secondary. Fact is, Thomas Davis is a very good athlete who has been given the best chance for him to simply play each game as a round peg in a round hole.

Dallas has a few players who are currently round pegs could fill round holes but the Jason Garrett player development program is an empty brick building with a locked door and an undisclosed location. So, in my opinion, the following players are in the wrong position and could be filling a better need with much greater success if the Garrett drain-trust would see the potential and put in the time.

LB Bruce Carter. (Assumed re-signed). Move to DE. Can shed blocks, is very fast, can be a nightmare to a ball crossing the LOS. Will not need to cover anyone but an occasional outside route in the flat for a TE or FB.

FS: JJ Wilcox: Move to WLB. Violently and hastily flies to the ball. Does not need to cover as much as find the ball. Wilcox has no business being in a thinking role or even a role that requires him to cover a great deal of options and zones. The Marinelli WLB flows to the ball on every snap. Wilcox should have that role.

LB Kyle Wilber: Move to DE. Watched a lot of Wilber. I think he is just a very good straight line player, he doesn't maven laterally well and he certainly doesn't change direction well like LBs need to do. But if Dallas gives Wilber the chance at DE and train him to simply get into the backfield (like Marinellis DL is supposed to), he will resemble the highlight reel that he had coming out of Wake Forest. Reminds me of Mike Vrabel, but because Dallas is not a 3-4, Wilber should just rush as a DE. Wilber could fill a rotational need right now at DE, but he's just not a dexterous enough athlete to be a dynamic and starting LB.

CB Mo Claiborne. Move to FS. Tracks the ball in the air well. Needs only intermediate coverage skills and needs speed and range to be in a position to stop the ball whether in the air on on the ground. Not the most physical player but is certainly more gifted than JJ Wilcox in the secondary.

I thought this thread was going to be about Barry Church. He'd be a more apt candidate to make the successful transition to WLB.

Not horrible ideas but teams would run all over and through us.

Aside from the occasional mental lapse Carter is good in coverage. Regardless, he's set to be a FA and more than likely will get a better offer from another team because of his high INT count this year. If I was Carter I'd go sign with the saints. He had his best year with Rob Ryan and they could use all the players on D they can get.

Wilcox moving down isn't a bad idea but I think the problem with our safeties is that they both are SS in the box types. Neither is a FS. Wilcox reminds me of a more athletic Keith Davis. Like Midswat said, the best move for him might be to the bench.

Wilbur.. I trust Marinelli here. I mean run downs he's at SLB and pass downs when he's in we seen him at both LB and DE. That seems to be the trend recently with NFL defenses. I just think Wilbur is an average player and we shouldn't expect much out of him either way. He's the type of role player that every good team has.

Claiborne can't stay healthy. Moving him to the more physical safety position doesnt seem like a good idea.

Since we're talking moving players around... One I'd love to see moved is Carr. Seems like we're stuck in that contract from what I read so looks like he's staying on the team. When he first got here he played FS and he played it well. I'd like to see Carr moved to safety this offseason. At least in some packages, maybe obvious passing downs. I think it would save his career. Sorta like it prolonged Charles Woodson's.

If they are bringing back scrubs like Brandon Carr and Morris Claiborne(what a fucking waste of money), they better bring Carter back. He was huge in coverage.

I completely agree. I'd love to cut both of them. Maybe someone with a better understanding of Carrs contract can comment... Not too long ago I read some where about how we're stuck this year and don't save money cutting him.. Not sure how credible it was tho. DCU cap gurus where you at?

IIRC we save like half a mil cutting Carr... so not likely to happen. Would still have to find a starting CB.

reminds me of when fans wanted to move RW31 to LB when he got toasted all the time

Cap hit with Carr -- $12.717 mil

Dead money if cut -- $12.151 mil

2016 we save roughly $6.4 mil by cutting him.

Financially it doesn't make sense to cut him maybe. But jesus... I'd rather take that 550k cap savings than see him on the field. He was an absolute liability last year. One of our worst defenders.

If nothing else, cut him to send a message to the other shitbags on our team. Cap be damned. Perform or hit the road.

Yep.

But given those numbers pep posted, I bet we keep him. Jerry/Stephen will assume he'll improve, Marinelli can coach him up, etc. One of the negative consequences of last year is that the team will think everything they do will continue to go right just like it did last year. It won't.

One shining light on Carr is that he locked it down against the Packers. Maybe in that game he found out how to cover?

Not even worth it this year... Maybe we get him to take a pay cut.

Ideal situation for us.. Pay cut, move to FS.
