So he was handed two all timers in Elway and Young. And Young was Walsh's hand picked baby, btw. And was under .500 with Cutler. And who exactly is exactly like Peyton Manning? Oh yeah. Elway and Young were pretty close. And trying to use him being the OC for a couple years with Young? Please. The QB coach would be working much closer to him then the OC would. Also, Young was well past his formative years. When Shanahan showed up, he'd already played a few years in the USFL, a couple with the Bucs, and 4 with the Niners. Besides, take a look at the offensive firepower that was on the Niners at the time. It's not like he was turning water into wine. And Plummer was also a decent QB, just needed out of that train wreck known as the Cardinals. The rest? A big fat FEH.
One (1) playoff win after Elway hung 'em up. Same amount as that other well known QB guru, Wade Phillips. Yep. That Mike Shanahan. The epitome of a QB genius.
