It’s safe to say Jason Garrett is more of a conservative coach on Sundays. He’s not someone who takes big-time risks, or calls trick plays very often.
But Garrett showed he isn’t afraid to roll the dice a little bit during the Senior Bowl on Saturday. Granted, it’s an all-star collegiate game with little at stake.
Still, it was interesting to see Garrett go for it on a fourth-and-three from his own 27 with less than a minute remaining in the first quarter. The Senior Bowl treats every quarter as a separate half, attempting to give every quarterback a chance to run the two-minute offense.
Garrett’s North squad failed to get the first down in that situation, as North Dakota State’s Carson Wentz threw an incomplete pass to Ohio State’s Braxton Miller that could have been caught.
In the third quarter, the North Team blocked a field goal and had a first-and-goal at the 5 with six seconds left. The first down play, which drew a defensive pass interference, left two seconds on the clock and put the ball on the 1.
With the North team trailing 20-10 at the time, a field goal would have made it a one-possession game. But Garrett opted to go for it, and USC’s Cody Kessler couldn’t connect with Miller.
“Yeah, we were a little aggressive, and I think a big part of that was to evaluate the guys,” Garrett said. “How do they handle a fourth-and-3 at the 27? How do they handle the last play of the third quarter when you’re inside the 1-yard line, who is going to make a play? Who is going to respond the right way?
“Again, that goes to the evaluation as well. We’re also trying to win the game.”
