he was a FA

Correct, to make matters worse, Jerry turned down a second round draft pick when the Bengals called wanting him. MartyB had already shown his true colors and Jerry still wouldn't trade him.

Like I said, there's blame on both levels here. They didn't need to spend three 2nd rd picks on backup TE's to begin with, but once they did the coaches should find a way to maximize the talent on the roster. They clearly arnt doing that here.

I don't think anyone in their right mind expects our 2nd TE to catch 60 balls and have 10 tds. But they could get a guy like Escobar on the field for more than 9 damn plays a week and at least try to involve him some in the passing game.
Do you remember Jason promising Jerry that they were going to run more of the 12 package with positive results if Jerry would draft Escobar? I will give Jerry credit for questioning the possibility that Escobar would be a wasted pick, but Red promised to make it work.

The sad thing is I believe Escobar and Hanna are good recruits, either of which could be groomed to replace Witten when it's his time to retire. And from the looks of it, they're probably going to be wasted.

Yeah I do. They swore up and down they wouldn't waste him and waste the resource of that pick.

But they have so far.

I am not surprised that it is another wasted resource. I didn't think that they was going to change to the Pats offense like so many predicted.

Its sad, but the only way Escobar will ever be worth it here is if he replaces Witten as the #1 TE

Assuming that doesn't happen relatively soon, he'll leave via free agency, we'll get nothing for him (and have virtually no production to show for his time here) and he'll blossom into a quality receiving TE as the #1 guy elsewhere, like Martellus Bennett is doing in Chicago.

Bennett never applied himself in Dallas, and tried to malinger in NY as well, Coughlin didn't put up with it. That he is showing better in Chicago now is because he knows few chances might be left.

Can't compare Bennett to Escobar or Hanna, the latter two give more effort every day than Bennett ever gave in Dallas his whole time there.

Sad thing is, Escobar is probably less capable of that than the other two guys because he can't block.

He's really right where he should be as a specialty receiving TE. The guy did show good hands last year, I thought. Who cares if the other team knows he's probably going out for a pass, the guy is way taller and has better ball skills than any DB or LB who will be on him.

I hated the pick for a lot of reasons, none of which were his talent. The guy could be a monster if utilized.

The problem is, Garrett's offense isn't deep enough to utilize a Dunbar or an Escobar with any regularity. You'll see them get a look every 2 or 3 weeks. They'll flash and then you'll forget they exist until they pop up again. Same thing with Cole Beasley, he's a dynamic possession WR who should get 3-4 looks a game, maybe a bubble screen, something to get him involved.
