Todd McShay: Mark Barron 'does everything pretty well'

April, 18, 2012 Apr 1811:19AM CT
By Calvin Watkins | ESPNDallas.com

Several mock drafts have the Cowboys taking Alabama safety Mark Barron with the 14th overall pick.

ESPN's Todd McShay had these comments on Barron in a conference call with reporters:

"Barron, I don't know that he has elite, elite physical tools when you go back and look at some of the top-five, top-ten picks at safety, and there's just not many of them. But I don't see many weaknesses. He does everything pretty well. You can pick on how much range does he have. Is he your classic Ed Reed center-fielder type? No. But he's instinctive enough, gets in position, and I think can cover enough ground to easily. Certainly in a two-high safety look, he can get to the sideline and then occasionally if he's stuck in the middle third, I think he can hold up because he's so instinctive. But I love him against tight ends in man-to-man coverage, and obviously the value is rising in terms of that ability."

Another issue regarding Barron is whether the Cowboys would move up to get him.

I don't think Dallas will move up to get him. If he for some reasons gets drafted higher than 14, that means someone else is falling i.e. Coples, DeCastro, or Ingram

Mark barron- Pretty good

No thanks

Don't want to use a top 15 pick on a guy that is just solid at the safety position. I want an elite level safety if I am picking him that high and Mark barron is not that guy.
Will he improve our dreaded safety play. Yes. but so would a second or third round safety.
First round pick is too important to take a chance on this guy

He played on an absolutely loaded defense not to mention

Rarely, if ever, are elite-tagged prospects available after the top 10 picks. Yeah, yeah, Tom Brady blah blah blah.

and every pick considered "elite" and drafted early has always worked out well

Wtf does that have to do with anything? I'm not the one screaming no to Barron because I want to take an elite safety at 14.

edit: I have a sense that you're agreeing with me here. Sorry, david.

Casserly: Barron is worth a top 10 pick Draft's hottest prospect: Mark Barron's worth a top-10 pick
By Charley Casserly

In speaking with teams these days about where particular players could be selected in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft, I'm continually asked one particular question: Will Alabama safety Mark Barron be available when it is our turn to pick?

The message here is crystal clear: A lot of teams are very interested in selecting Barron high in Round 1. Why is there all this interest in Barron? Well, to put it simply Barron is one of the best players in this draft.

Most people feel that six prospects are "a cut above" the rest in this class: QB Andrew Luck, QB Robert Griffin III, OT Matt Kalil, RB Trent Richardson, CB Morris Claiborne and WR Justin Blackmon. My next-rated player is Barron.

Back in my executive days with the Washington Redskins, when there was a tie between two players on our draft board, I always asked two questions:

1) Who will make the most Pro Bowls?
2) Who do you want to take to the Meadowlands to play the Giants?

These two questions always helped break a tie.

I've studied five games of Barron in action, and he's the player who would receive the most positive answers from those two questions. Barron is 6-foot-1, 213 pounds and runs the 40-yard dash in the 4.50's. He is very smart; Nick Saban runs a complex defense at Alabama and Barron had no problem understanding it. He should be able to be the defensive signal caller for his NFL team. He is very athletic and has the ability to play man coverage versus tight ends, which is not common in a safety. He is also exceptional when playing zone defense. Barron has excellent instincts to break on the ball and the speed to cover a lot of ground. As a physical player and fine tackler, he often played linebacker in 'Bama's nickel defense. When I evaluate Barron as a safety, I do not see anything he can't do. To me, he's a very safe pick.

So, how high do you take a safety? That depends on how important the position is to your defense. If it is important, then Barron qualifies as a top-10 pick in this year's draft.

Here is how I rate Barron against some highly regarded safeties taken in the top 15 of recent drafts when they were coming out of college ...

Rated higher than Barron:

• Eric Berry, 2010 draft, fifth pick (Kansas City): Better cover skills, could cover some receivers.

Rated lower than Barron:

• Earl Thomas, 2010 draft, 14th pick (Seattle): Not as good a tackler.

• LaRon Landry, 2007 draft, sixth pick (Washington): Not as stout in man-to-man coverage.

• Michael Huff, 2006 draft, seventh pick (Oakland): Not as physical.

• Donte Whitner, 2006 draft, eighth pick (Buffalo): Barron rates better in all phases of the game.

• Sean Taylor 2004 draft, fifth pick (Washington): Not as smooth in the hips, could not cover as well.

In scouting for the draft, you compare prospects to previous players taken in a round to decide what value to put on them. This is how I arrive at my thinking: Mark Barron is worth a top-10 pick.
