Jerry Jones picks Rob Ryan as Cowboys’ scapegoat

Rob Ryan was hired as Cowboys defensive coordinator in 2011. (Brandon Wade/AP)
Jerry Jones was desperate to find someone to blame (other than himself, of course) for the Dallas Cowboys’ latest disappointing season, and it looks like he got his man in defensive coordinator Rob Ryan.

A frustrated Jones said during a radio interview last week that “change is necessary at 8-8. We’re going to have some changes. … There are a lot of teams that haven’t been at .500, but nobody hasn’t been at .500 and spent as much cash as I’m spending.”

The obvious candidate to receive a pink slip during Jones’ reorganization period was, in most people’s eyes, head coach Jason Garrett. The Cowboys have finished 8-8 in both of Garrett’s two full seasons as head coach (he finished the 2010 year 5-3 after taking over for Wade Phillips), plus lost Week 17 winner-take-all games for the division each of those years.

How much of that was Ryan’s fault? In Jones’ opinion, enough of it to go another way on the defensive side of the ball. The statistics seem to back him up — Dallas finished this year ranked 19th in yards allowed and 24th in points.

Injuries certainly played a big role in Dallas’ failures on that side of the ball, though. And there are plenty of Cowboys fans out there who would pin more of the blame, rightfully so, on an underachieving offense.

That is Garrett’s domain. The Cowboys’ head coach calls the plays for the Dallas attack. Despite having Tony Romo, DeMarco Murray, Jason Witten, Dez Bryant, Miles Austin and others, the Cowboys finished just 15th in points scored this year, and the offense flopped for three quarters in that Week 17 loss.

Jones still could switch things up on offense, too, by giving current offensive coordinator Bill Callahan more responsibility … or by canning Callahan and adding a new O.C.

The Cowboys’ play calling appears to be the only job duty Garrett is in danger of losing at this time, even with Jones promising swift and sweeping adjustments. But the Ryan scapegoating may go down as a mistake, and it’s already one that drew the ire of a couple Cowboys defenders.

The window may be closing on Garrett’s time in Dallas — Ryan and running backs coach Skip Peete have been let go already, and more of Garrett’s staff could be on the unemployment line soon, so eventually, Dallas’ inability to get to the postseason has to fall on the head coach.

Garrett apparently will get a third shot, however, to turn the Cowboys around, with Jones looking over his shoulder.

“I’m going to spend a lot of time visiting with people outside of the organization. … That will help us evaluate how to do the things that I know what our fans want to do, and that’s not be sitting here at .500,” Jones said. “There are a lot of teams that haven’t been at .500, but nobody hasn’t been at .500 and spent as much cash as I’m spending.”

On Romo, Jones said, “Tony is a tremendous asset, and he’s an asset that is going to be with the Dallas Cowboys for, as far as I am concerned, a long time.”

As I mentioned in another thread, if Garrett has to hire someone else like Norv Turner to run the offense and call plays, this "scapegoat" theory doesnt really float.

And it appears someone else will be running the offense.

He is still being scapegoated. Garrett is getting a pass.

Same thing with Skip Peete.

How dare you not have a better running game Skip! I mean, you get 5 running plays called a game. WTF weren't you more productive??!!??

How could you not make Lance Dunbar or Phillip Tanner quality RB's. I know we got them off the street basically but its your job

Also, Skip's off-season plan for Felix Jones was joining him at Golden Corral 5 times a week. Clearly to blame for Felix showing up out of shape.

They must really think the fans are stupid. I guess there are enough CZ homers to fill the seats and continue to buy merchandise, bc this is clearly a worse "fix" than when they ignored Nicks, Grubbs, Konz and Decastro in order to bring in the terrifying Livings/Bernedeux combo.

I don't get the peete firing yet.

but I have no idea why people are all worked up over ryan.

He is and always has been a lousy coordinator. I don't think he is well respected around the league and I think unless garrett does something really dumb here, we will have a better defensive staff next year.

and yes I have been saying it all along. Ryan stinks.

I dont really think anyone is too upset with Ryan getting fired. We just think it is hypocritcal that Garrett gets to stay and he did an equal if not worse job than Ryan did

I guess I am upset with Jerry for constantly thinking the fans are stupid and that this BIG change will someohow fix things

so what happened to the story about an assistant being so upset at Valley Ranch they had to sit him down in his office?

Ryan was supposedly notified via phone (so classy) so we know that wasn't him.

How's he getting a pass if some of his responsibility is being stripped? If he was truly getting a pass, they wouldnt hire another OC/playcalelr (and I'm assumign the rumors are true, that they intend to)

Also, when you a RB coach and go 6 yrs with no 1000 yd rushers, and your backup RB's constantly have trouble in pass protection and other assignments, you are probably going to get fired.

Yeah Broaddus (pretty sure it was him) said no assistants were at VR.

I still dont think its 100% certainty that Garrett "stays", but even if he does stay as HC, it does appear he is getting fired as OC.

if this team brings in a competent guy to run the offense - along with a competent guy to run the defense, what the fuck is everyones issue?

now, i doubt we will do those 2 things, because jerry has proven that he cant do those 2 things correctly

it seems he is the one making all these decisions. david moore said this morning that he and jerry have been having meetings for a while now and garrett is laying out the changes he needs apparently.

I never really gave it much thought, but yeah, all indications was that Skip Peete is/was a terrible RB coach.

I am upset that Ryan has become the scapegoat while Garret is perfectly safe.

Do you think Garret will be fired. If you do than your pretty naive

That's still different than Rob Ryan losing paychecks. Garrett gets to keep making his 3 mil a year.

I don't think that's true at all. I think this is spinning (not by you) the Garrett is still in charge message. Jerry was supposedly in seclusion, talking to his "counsel" of outsiders, and suddenly there are some firings. This reeks of Jerry. Jason said he did not suspect anything would change as far as him calling plays at the last press conference and now it looks like he'll be assigned an offensive coordinator. That is pure Jerry.
