Cowboys say jackson was out of shape. Had poor workout. No plans to bring any else in

Not what this says on DC.com:

The club still has about five free agent centers in mind, according to a source, but the clock is ticking. After a signing, three work days must pass before the player can join the team in practice. Without getting to see the center in pads, the team might be reluctant to dress him against San Diego, in the second preseason game on Saturday.

Also not what this says:

Center search resumes after passing on Jamaal Jackson

August, 12, 2012

By Tim MacMahon | ESPNDallas.com

OXNARD, Calif. -- The Cowboys will continue their search for a center, opting not to sign Jamaal Jackson after his workout Sunday, a source said.

The source said that Jackson, the former Philadelphia Eagles starter who has not played since suffering an arm injury in 2010, was in poor shape.

The Cowboys are in the market for a veteran center because their top three players at the position are injured.

Starter Phil Costa will miss Monday night's preseason opener because of a back strain, but he is expected to return to practice next week.

Bill Nagy and Kevin Kowalski are sidelined by serious ankle injuries. Nagy is likely to need surgery and be out for the season.

Cowboys director of player personnel Stephen Jones said the Cowboys are looking for "insurance" at center, indicating that they are comfortable with Costa as the starter despite his struggles last year.

Jackson apparently tweeted he might still be signed before the opener. Maybe that means he is going to try and get in shape.

Report was his workout was awful, out of shape badly. Which isnt a tremendous surprise considering he's hardly played in a long time.

lol

He is a JAG. It's retarded that he is who we were hanging our hats on as a possible solution for help. Hell, bring in the best 3 centers you can possibly find and work them out. Why are we wasting our fucking time on this nonsense?

pretty stupid it has gotten to this point.

As multiple good centers were available at the onset of FA, I can't believe Dallas just thumbed their poopers.

They (Jerry) really like Costa. It's his MO. Stick to a player until it is too obvious not to address. And then do so with scrubs until forced to use a high draft pick. RE: Tyron Smith

Finding players difficult this time of year
August, 12, 2012

By Todd Archer | ESPNDallas.com

FREMONT, Calif. – The Cowboys’ decision to pass on signing veteran center Jamaal Jackson is an illustration of how difficult it is for teams to find players at this time.

Conditioning will be a factor for those out of work at this stage, especially veterans. The increased roster sizes from 80 to 90 players mean there are 320 fewer players available than in the past. The three-day acclimation period does not help fill an immediate need.

From all indications, Jackson was not in good enough shape to warrant a signing. He has not played a meaningful down since 2009. If you’re wondering about Andre Gurode, well, conditioning was a factor when he was under contract and took part in an offseason program. You would have to guess there would be conditioning issues now.

The Cowboys have short lists at all positions of need, and they’ve debated the merits of all kinds of players, while wondering what we’ve already discussed.

For now the Cowboys will stick with what they have.

If they need to find somebody in the near future to either get them through practices or have a legitimate shot at making the 53-man roster, then look for them to grab players who have been to a camp and cut recently. They will be in better condition and will not be held to the three-day rule.

I know this is a difficult concept for you to grasp, because everything Dallas does always sux.

But not many teams have a 4th or 5th option at C when they lose all the other guys they thought would make the team.

Seriously dude, WTF do you see as available right now? Its pretty much those kinds of guys.

Without having to think much, Jason Brown comes to mind. And, regardless, bring in some guys that have actually played center before. That would be an upgrade over Arkin. Also, just about any god damn center in the league (4th string even) couldn't be worse than Costa. Bring in competition. Just bring in something. What the hell does it hurt to bring in 4-5 guys to work them out?

Oh wait, you are sold on Jones having it all under control. Nevermind.

Regardless, though, we let ourselves get in this situation. Jerry allowed us to come in to camp with Costa (who sucks) and Nagy and Kowalski (both injury prone) as our hope at the center position. It's ridiculous, and defending it makes you look like an idiot.

It sux Nagy and Kowalski both got hurt, because I do think either of them would have won the C job and been an upgrade over Costa.

That said, its hard to label them "injury prone" when they've both only been in the league a year.
