To keep him here as well? Would Tony take a big pay cut to stay? Is that even allowed?

I think there are limits built into the CBA about how much you can cut someone's pay, but not 100% sure.

I don't agree about not being able to trade him though. They can rework his deal to make it more affordable to trade, and they are going to gain something by getting his salary off the books. I don't have all the trade/release/retire cap info this sec but it has been posted recently and it is doable. The key is getting him into a situation he wants to go to, so that he is agreeable to reworking his deal. I think that was always a given anyway though, they wouldn't trade him somewhere he had no interest in.
Why would Tony agree to re-work his deal? It can't be so he can dictate where he goes, because he gets to do that if he's cut too... plus he gets the money he's owed. I don't see what there is for him to gain by that. You're just allowing the Cowboys to take your salary off the books and get compensation from your new team? Doesn't make sense.

You have to see what details come out in whatever the new deal is that he negotiates, it could be bonus money paid after he's on the new team or something. He might not be "giving up" anything overall, just making a trade more doable for us (and whatever team is involved) by freeing up cap space.

It's the same type of maneuver teams make when they renegotiate deals with their own guys to keep them. Many times the player isn't "giving up" anything, they are just moving money around or how its being counted.

The issue with trading Tony is how it effects the Cowboys cap because they have to burn off 19.6 million in dead cap the moment he's traded unless they can find a creative way to get around this by doing a trade subject to Dallas cutting Romo as a June 1st cut (he's a vested vet not subject to waivers, so Romo would have the choice to go where he wants and would have to be on board with the cut & trade scenario--which I don't even know if this would be allowed within the NFL rules).

Romo has no guaranteed money due him by the Cowboys going forward and his salary for 2017 is 14 million and $19.5 million in 2018 which should* be a bargain for the team that trades for him (* obviously assuming he stays heathy and performs as expected).

The reasons why I feel he would cooperate with the Cowboys is:

1. The one thing we can say about jeri is he takes care of his players so I would bet he'd work with jeri to help the Cowboys get compensation in return for the shitload of money he's been paid.

2. If he is traded and allowed to negotiate with his new team prior to the trade, then he will likely get a higher salary in 2017 plus guaranteed up front money whereas if a team trades for his current contract, they get him at a good price with no guaranteed money and can cut him lose at any time without a big cap hit.

I think they'll work together to try and find a place that he'd like to play that would also want Romo. I only see three potential landing spots and they all have serious hurdles to getting a deal done, this would be the Texans, Vikings & Broncos, imo.

Anyone see any other landing spots?

If I couldn't get a could trade before the draft, I'd try to find a way to hold on to Romo deep into training camp and possibly beyond to see if some team gets desperate and is willing to unload some juicy picks and/or players.

No way I cut him until the last possible second.

Romo is done in Dallas. As much as Jerry loves him he isnt going to be the starter again.

Jerry sees Dak, Zeke and Dez as his new triplets and he'll be patient thinking a new dynasty is in the making. As he convinces himself of this it will also justify keeping Garrett so the whole group grows together and brings the next 3 Lombardi trophies. Dak being young justifies keeping Garrett. And that makes Dak invaluable. And for Jerry its all a win win.
