Romo Throwing Fully, Ready To Participate In Offseason Program

Saturday, April 16, 2016 10:22 AM CDT

By David Helman

DallasCowboys.com Staff Writer

ARLINGTON, Texas – The Cowboys’ officially start their offseason program on Monday, but Tony Romo has been back at work a bit longer than that.

“It’s been going great here for the last two, three weeks – just getting them going and being able to go full speed and all that stuff. It’s been great,” he said.

Romo spoke Saturday at an event hosted by All Pro Dad at AT&T Stadium. It was the first time he’s spoken publicly since he underwent surgery on his left clavicle, which he fractured twice during the course of the 2015 season. Back on March 8 he had a Mumford procedure, in which a portion of the clavicle is shaved down to alleviate stress on the bone.

Recovery time for the surgery was slated at six-to-eight weeks, and Romo said he’s able to throw fully and participate in offseason workouts.

“I can throw fully,” he said. “I’ve been throwing fully here for a good week and a half, two weeks. It’s been good.”

The Cowboys can officially start their offseason program on April 18. As dictated by the NFL’s Collective Bargaining Agreement, the offseason program starts with two weeks of strength and conditioning. The second phase of the program includes on-field workouts, drills and instruction – though no live contact or team offense vs. team defense drills are allowed.

Given that he can throw, though, Romo said he has had an opportunity to throw with his receiver – including Dez Bryant.

“We’ve gotten out there,” he said. “It’s part of the offseason and you’re always getting better.”

As is typically the case, Romo said the Cowboys have had strong participation throughout the offseason, despite the fact that the program doesn’t officially start until this week. Cowboys coach Jason Garrett has often pointed out that many Cowboys players live in the Dallas area during the offseason, which usually leads to strong offseason participation – something Romo said has continued in 2016.

“We’ve had a great turnout,” Romo said. “A lot of guys are wanting to get in and get after it, and I think that’s a great sign. I’m all for seeing all the guys in there every day.”

I'm not concerned about Romo throwing against air. It's when he has 250-300 lb grown ass men trying to rip his head off.

Hope he gets re-injured. I'm sorry but you endorse a clown like Garrett and you're dead to me.

Perhaps Jason will figure out to keep a FB on the field to help block for Romo. I'm also thinking that they'll trade a late round pick in next years draft for Nic Foles as a backup this year

Romo/Foles/Goff

I wouldn't mind that QB depth chart this year.

Romo played four games last season and broke his clavicle in two of those four games

We NEED to find his replacement in this draft. We no longer have the luxury of believing/assuming he will be able to play all 16 games ever again nor will he be a viable option for the next 4-5 years as Jerry has stated.

We can not afford to be that foolish ever again

Fix the problem now or suffer the 4-12 consequences for two more decades

If they draft a QB somewhere in round one, I think that guy becomes the primary backup at some point during camp/preseason. Maybe they go back to going with two QB's then.

Don't waste the #1 on Goff (who probably won't be there at #4 anyway), take Bosa to help our pathetic defense

I can definitely understand your thinking but future backup is also in play. If they can find a long term answer at backup QB the have to consider it. Now that Hoyer is free I'd definitely prefer him over Foles. Worst case (but realistic) scenario let's say Romo is lost again, Goff/Hoyer is much better than Goff/Moore.

This is where the logic gets stinky and almost obviously phony with the Dallas front office. If Romo is expected to be the QB this season, meaning there is no need for an upgrade in the draft NOR concern about a replacement, then it should be ideal to draft a QB this season if Romo is expected to play the whole season. What a great opportunity for a QB who will not be needed to play to learn behind Romo. Getting a veteran backup QB is really just wasting time that could be better spent with a future QB since Romo is the fail safe.

But the problem with all of that Jones PR logic is we all know:
1. Romo has a good chance of getting knocked out of a game or the season, just because that offense puts him at risk several times a game with empty backfield sets, obvious play calling, and "asking the offensive line to hold their blocks a little longer".
2. 36 years old is old. 4-5 years more of playing is asking a Commodore 64 computer to run IOS.
3. The big fear is another vet QB will come in and not be able to play in Jason's "system". The only "success" story in QB development is Kitna. He was already developed when he got here.

How is Bosa going to help when Romo's career is ended by the next hit and we have no viable QB to replace him? He'll just end up being a Greg Ellis on a team with the Leafs, Q-Cars, Chutches and Hensons cycling in and out at QB as the team repeats the Campo era.

I'm all for taking a QB at 4, but if they cant get one there and take Bosa it will improve the defense.

Not sure where people are getting this Greg Ellis comparison. Bosa has been far more dominant at Ohio State than Ellis was at UNC.

That said, on this shit DL I'd gladly take Greg Ellis in his prime here now.

Yea, Bosa is a much better prospect than Ellis was. That comparison is for the doom and gloomers that think its all or nothing for a QB.

Spend next years first on a QB? There's other drafts. If we miss out on a QB this year or take a defensive player instead, we can always go for a QB next offseason. Not the end of the world.

I honestly do not see how he is MUCH better than Ellis. Ellis was a 6-8 sack a year guy that played the run well. That's exactly what Bosa is. He will have a solid career but he's not a game changer. He's not Demarcus Ware, he's not Von Miller, and he's not JJ Watt.

From what I've been reading next year's QB class is weaker than this year's and they likely will not be drafting in the top 10 next year. I expect this team to finish closer to 8-8 this year. So with a weaker QB class the best they could get in the 1st would be a guy the caliber of Hackenberg or Dak Prescott. Not the end of the world but not exactly a home run either.

Watch his games then. He's dominant. Other team's offenses have to gameplan around him. They double teamed him extensively, sometimes even tripled him according to their coaches.

That was never the case for Ellis, who was a really good college player and solid prospect.
