What was the time frame from when those guys retired and Jerry bought the team?

Both retired after the '83 season, so five or six years. Yes, Tex Schramm could have inducted them, but save for Lilly he made retired players wait several years--even Staubach.

I'm fine with Woodson in the ROH yet kinda agree with Bob. Then again, he isn't going into the HOF. Most outside of Dallas appreciate his impact. We Cowboys fans should especially considering how we've not been able to replace him still.

But yeah, no real defining moment stands out. Just a steady, superb career that is missed.

Steve Atwater is known for blasting Christian Okoye and effectively ending his reign of terror.

Woodson was pretty widely regarded as one of the premier cover safeties of his time, especially his first half dozen or so years in the league. He was also a lights out hitter.

Woody never got into any of the hype and wasn't a self promoter or a hot dogger. He was just a lunch pail guy who showed up and did the job as well or better than any of his peers in the league, and did it for many years. To me he is the epitome of what should be up there in the RoH. 5 pro bowls, three all-pro selections, Bart Starr man of the year recipient, Ed Block courage award, Three SB rings, All-time club leader in tackles.... 23 picks, 11 sacks...

Was a linebacker in college who made the conversion to NFL safety - in every respect Woody was a overachiever.

We've had great safties in the past like Cornell Green, Cliff Harris but I think Darren Wooden was the last great one.

He could play the against the run and the pass.

When he left the game, Roy Williams basically went with him. Without Darren, Roy couldn't just play to his strength of run defense, he was never that versatile and he got exposed.

Darren deserves to be in and he shouldn't be the last to be considered. But this is about him good to hear.

Cornell Green played most of his career at CB and I had overlooked that he moved to safety later in his career and played at a pro-bowl level. Good find.

I'm happy for Woodson and the guy was a great player on a great defense and great team. It's no wonder we haven't been able to adequately replace him after all these years.

What I remember about Woody was when that Seattle receiver had seizures in the locker room and literally could have died from a Woodson hit.

If I were in charge of the ROH, there would be a place for Bill Bates and Moose Johnston.

I think the problem here and the reason why he's so under appreciated is because his whole career was over shadowed by the triplets than obviously Deion - I love him but was an attention whore. I mean shit, the day Woodson broke the franchise record for tackles Emmit became the leagues leading rusher.

But never an impact player?? GTFOH

For a decade Woodson was the leader of our defense. Guys like Glover mentioned how they signed here because of him.

Woodson played the run better than any safety at the time being labeled by sports illustrated as one of the leagues hardest hitters AND lined up in the slot to cover, never being a liability. Not many safeties in league history could do that. And he still played special teams, finishing 2nd behind Bill Bates in tackles.. And how about the fact that he never played safety til he got to the pros still accomplishing all of what he did..

Never an impact player my ass.

If you're judging impact based off of how many highlight reels you can find on YouTube Bob then you may be right. Roy Williams is clearly the better safety by that logic.

Fucking stupid. Anyone who played the game and especially that postion understands/appreciates a player like Woodson. We'll never be lucky enough to get another safety like him.

Was that the one he got suspended or fined bigtime for?

It was a 100% clean hit as I recall

I really don't think Jerry has much of an idea about the real history of this team. He strikes me as a guy who wasn't a fan before he bought the team. Sad that these guys are going to be left out because of it.
