Packers ate a ton of dead money. I also think there were probably other teams interested with what his contract numbers relative to age and production look like (like possibly his former coach in Miami)

A 4th next yr is valued at a 5th this yr so its not a gross overpay. Contrary to the deals for Murray and Elam last yr (and Mingo the yr before) Gary is actually pretty good at football. He isnt a gamble on greatness.
So call the Packers' bluff and let him go to FA. It wasn't imperative that we acquire him. He's not good enough that we needed to do something stupid to keep him away from other teams.

We needed an Edge rusher pretty bad. He's moderately priced for his production level and it's a day 3 pick next yr.

The Panthers just gave a guy with two major leg injuries and not a single season of double digit sack production 30+ mils per yr with a bunch of it guaranteed.

we traded our best defender to GB and keep getting inferior ones in return. brilliant.
"best defender"

Helped us win zilch, then did the same thing with GB

And we still have Quinnen Williams and an extra 1st rd pick to show for it.

Stupid fucks start free agency, where you just have to fork over $, with a TRADE. A 4th rounder is not insignificant. See: Mingo and Lance.
Mingo and Lance couldnt play.

Gary can, and has been productive.

another overpay

This I'll agree with but not so much with Gary. A 4th rounder for someone who should be an integral piece of a new scheme and can pressure the QB is not over the top. No doubt we overpaid for Mingo and others and no doubt Jerry doesn't know shit about putting a roster together, but I think Gary is a solid move. Now.....a high 1st rounder for a DT? I hate it.

We havent given up a high 1st rounder for a DT, yet.

And may not based on 2026 records.

Sorry but it just wasn't a good trade and don't forget we also included a second round pick in the deal. It's the higher of our two picks. I'd do that trade for my DT all day, every day.
