Doesn't happen often, but I found a somewhat interesting thread at CZ.

Knowing how the draft panned out now, how would you have redrafted for the Cowboys? You can either keep our original 6 picks (no trade down with Niners) or make the trade down as they did and have the 7 total picks.

I wanted us to trade down if Cooper or Warmack weren't there, so I'll take our picks as they happened:

1) I'd stick with Frederick for the same reason they took him. I think its unlikely he would have made it to 47 and he probably was the last interior guy who was a certain walk in day one starter. Interior OL was the worst position on the team and was clearly hurting the offense's ability to have any consistency, especially in the running game.

2) DT Bennie Logan. I like Escobar as a prospect and perhaps Logan would have been a little overdrafted here (like Frederick above), but at worst he would have been a rotational DT this yr and with Ratliff's propensity to be hurt, a good chance he starts. Really think he'd have been a good fit here.

3a) I'd stick with T Williams here. If you believe the reports, they considered releasing Austin after this past season. He's been injured too much for 2-3 seasons now and doesn't seem to have anywhere near the downfield explosiveness he had in 08/09. His cap figure is high, and there's a good chance T Williams can be the #2 guy here next yr.

3b) Demontre Moore DE Texas A&M. I like Wilcox's longterm upside a lot and he was one of my favorite small school guys in this draft, but Moore was once considered a top-20 pick and his game production/play is a lot better than his workout numbers (which were poor). Still, he would have been good depth behind Ware and Spencer and could be Spencer's eventual replacement.

4) Johnathan Franklin RB UCLA. I like Randle in the 5th too, but Franklin was one of my top picks for RB and he was still available here. Has a little more speed and can also help in the return game.

5) Jordan Mills T La Tech. Best case he might could have challenged for the RT job this year. Worst case he ends up the swing tackle and eventual RT starter down the road.

6) Baccari Rambo FS Georgia. Broaddus says he wasn't on our board, but the guy was the best ballhawking safety in college football the past few seasons. Can really play the deep halves and understands angles to the football. In the 6th rd (where the Skins also drafted him) its a low risk, potentially very high reward pickup.

Austin costs the same next year to cut or keep. He's not going anywhere if this team still has any sort of sense left.

All those restructures you've been defending?

Yeah... Austings got job security the next two years at least because of them.

Toldja so.

Yes, clear proof. You say its so.

If they were thinking about cutting him this yr, and he doesn't have a good year in 2013, they'll definitely consider cutting him next yr and almost assuredly will do so, especially if Williams is ready to replace him.

Here you go David. Let me know if you need anything else.

Austin isn't going anywhere next year. Cap hit of $7.8M to cut him, cap hit of $8.2M to keep him. If this team hadn't fucked around and restructured every year, his contract would be a steal from this point forward.

Without restructures, his cap hit next year is $5.5M....no cap hit to cut.

Without restructures, his cap hit in 2014 is $6.8M.....no cap hit to cut.

I'd need to see proof of that.

How many times do I need to post the website I pull all the contract numbers from?

Fuck man, you didn't need any proof to believe half the shit you've accepted as true. What proof did you have that it would save money to cut the guy next year after restructuring?

But the moment someone says you've misjudged things, that's when we need proof. Gotta have fucking proof now.

The cap hit wouldn't be 7.8 million if they cut him after June 1st correct?

Also even if they decided to keep him (certainly possible if he were healthy) he would be a candidate for a pay cut would he not?

Has Dallas ever restructured with a pay cut in recent years?

By the way, I guess I shouldnt have said "proof", I should have said "details"

Its not that I didn't believe you, I just wanted to see the numbers.

I sure hope so. He is a good player and we are better with him than without.

Sure, it'd be $3.9M for the year they cut him.....and then another $3.9M for the following season. Carry dead money for 1 year or 2 years.

I guess if you view each year in a vacuum you would avoid $3.9M in cap charges by cutting him and spreading it. Don't really see any advantage to having dead money for multiple years.

Personally, I think you have to look at a few years. If you look at 3 years from now here's a comparison.

1 year of play from Miles Austin: Total cap hit of $11.4M. Cost of his cap hit this year and the cap hits that would follow if he was cut.

3 seasons of play from Miles Austin: Total cap hit of $23.8M. Cost of cap hits for 2013, 2014, 2015 and dead money that would be left.

The difference of $12.4M likely could get a solid player but the trade off is that you lose a solid player.

As far as a paycut goes, that's a hard sell. You can't say, "We need you to take a paycut because we've mishandled your contract and your overall cap number is too high for us". His base salaries aren't that high for a good WR.

What player would actually go for that?

I don't know, although they did tell Free he had to take a paycut just a few weeks ago.

This would be far from a Free situation. Free absolutely doesn't deserve his base salary. Austin still produces so telling him to take a paycut isn't gonna go over well.

The thing about Free, Dallas restructured him prior to 2012. Had they not done that they could cut him right now and only have $6M in dead space while taking the entirety of the cap hit this year.

That one restructure increased the cost to cut him by $4M and now Dallas is essentially screwed because even if the spread the cap hit out over 2 years they're still taking a $5M cap hit this year.

Put Frederick in there instead of Warford and I heart this draft.
