Cowboys, Dez Bryant fail to reach contract extension

Kevin Patra

All the optimism and good meetings between Jerry Jones and Dez Bryant couldn't get a contract extension done for the Dallas Cowboys wide receiver.

NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Sunday morning that the sides did not reach an extension by Bryant's self-imposed deadline, according to sources involved in the situation. Now one isn't expected this year.

Bryant has insisted all offseason the contract talks weren't a distraction, but the wideout didn't want negotiations hanging over his head once games started.

Sides were making progress and a deal appeared on the brink late last month, but ultimately they couldn't lock down a deal.

The 25-year-old pass-catcher will enter the final year of his rookie contract paying him $1.78 million. Bryant believes he is a top-five receiver (he is) and should get paid like one (he should).

With Bryant closing the door on negotiations now that the Cowboys are set to kick off the season today against the San Francisco 49ers, he's a logical candidate to get slapped with the franchise tag before becoming the big fish on the open market.

Actually after today, you wonder if he really would WANT to stay here, especially know #9 is locked up for years because of a ridiculous Jerry contract decision.

The defense didn't play well at all. SF let way up after halftime. It helped that the refs were on our side today.

I thought that should have been a penalty. He wasn't in a position to contest the ball, and by nature that made him a defenseless receiver. And plus I thought the NFL basically outlawed spearing players in the back?

Yeah I thought so too, looked like he was totally defenseless and got speared.

This crew missed a lot of stuff and called some stuff (on both sides) that was kinda ridiculous.

Every game I watched today had some sort of bad officiating in it.

SF could have put up 50+ today. If the cowboy offense scores inside the 5 twice, SF would have embarrassed the defense.

They could do whatever they wanted through the air, up until it was 28-3, then they lost interest and just coasted home.

SF took its foot off Dallas' throat. The second half was mercy on their part, not defense by Dallas.

Pretty much. They didn't let Perrish Cox or whatever back into the game at that point although he was cleared to play.

I hope he leaves. He doesn't deserve to be saddled with a shitty coach his whole career.
