Stephen A. Smith and Skip Bayless discussed Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett on ESPN's First Take. Here are some highlights.
Skip, are you OK with the Cowboys moving forward with Jason Garrett?
Skip Bayless: I covered Jason Garrett when he was a player for the Cowboys, and I know him pretty well. And he's a really nice guy, but he is not a head coach in the National Football League. I do believe he could be a good coordinator. I'm pretty sure he's a much better coordinator than a head coach. And if I owned and operated my Dallas Cowboys, I would have fired him after what I saw this past season. I did not give Jason Garrett any credit for last year's 12-4. And I do give him a heaping helping of the blame for what happened this year during 4-12. Seven times they had chances to win just a couple of games to hang in the pitiful NFC East race that was finally won by default by the Washington Redskins. Seven times they failed to win close games. If Mike Tomlin had coached my Dallas Cowboys this year, I guarantee you they would have won two of those seven, just on force of will and motivation. Just on fear factor. There isn't one player in that locker room who is afraid of what Jason Garrett might do if they fail in a football game. I came up in this business under Jimmy Johnson, who put the wrath of god in every player who played for him. The great Duane Thomas once called Tom Landry a "plastic man." Jason Garrett is the ultimate plastic man. I think he's actually made out of plastic. The best thing Jason Garrett can do is clap, that's all he does. No matter how bad it gets on the field, you'd see him on the sideline just clapping. You know why he can get away with that? Because he's become Jerry Jones' third son. Jerry loves the heck out of Jason Garrett because Jason's a good guy. He's the ultimate plastic puppet for Jerry Jones. He does Jerry's bidding. Trust me. I know him. He's really a fine fellow. You'd like being around him. He says all the right things to Jerry Jones. And Jerry's gonna keep him around because Jerry just likes the heck out of Jason Garrett. And I don't. Not as the head football coach for my Dallas Cowboys. Should have been fired because this team was good enough, even without Tony Romo, to be in this year's playoffs.
