INDIANAPOLIS – When executive vice president Stephen Jones kept the door open for Doug Free’s return to the Cowboys in 2013, it surprised some.

Given his $7 million salary, the team’s need for cap room and Free’s poor play in 2012, it seemed a given the team would move on.

Not so fast.

The Cowboys are considering using Free at guard after he starting at left or right tackle over the last four seasons.

“We’re looking at it,” Jones said. “We’re going to un-turn every stone to get better. I wouldn’t rule him out at tackle either. He’s a pretty versatile guy. He’s smart.”

Free started every game at right tackle in 2012 switching sides with Tyron Smith. He led the NFL in penalties in 2012 with eight false starts and seven holding flags, but he played what Jones called “his best ball of the year,” after moving to a platoon with Jermey Parnell.

Could a full-season rotation work?

“No one has ever done it but it didn’t mean you can’t,” Jones said. “But I think at some point someone would win the job.”

While the Cowboys liked what Parnell did in 2012, they have some questions about his ability to start a full season. Free would not appear to have correct build to play on the interior but the Cowboys have said they need more from last year’s free-agent pickups Nate Livings and Mackenzy Bernadeau. On Saturday owner and general manager Jerry Jones said the Cowboys would like to add a guard/center type in the draft.

“The bottomline is we have two guys who make me sleep at night at right tackle,” Jerry Jones said. “So I don’t know now what you do if all of a sudden you try to move one inside and change positions there.”

Being a fan of this team is a curse. It truly is.

I thought G might be the spot for him. I am not advocating bringing him back, but he cannot be worse than Bernadeau was.

Is he strong enough?

Picture it....

Cowboys are on the clock.

Warmack has fallen to us, and is our highest rated player.

We take a lesser rated player because we got Ronald Leary and this new Doug Free experiment to try out. Also, Romo don't need an Oline.

Yup, I can see it now. Jerry has the option of drafting Cooper and says, "wait, Doug Free has experience and played LT and RT, Imma pass on Cooper and start Free."

Our OL is good guys, don't worry. And Tony can scramble and stuff.

I get the feeling Garrett and Callahan want a more agile line, so he fits that criteria.

Also...the sad reality is that we are not trying to replace Larry Allen, we are still just trying to replace Kyle Kosier. Good player, but replaceable.

Yeah asshole, and if you keep playing those two guys at RT it'll make Romo "sleep" alot, except it'll be after getting KO'd during games

Hell, he can't get his arms extended at T, what makes them think he will even get close to it at G?

Missed this the first time I went through the article.

Yeah, but he's already said Costa will be better with help around him. I doubt the center/guard is anyone we want in the first two rounds.

The way he's talkin' it's gonna be someone in the later rounds who doesn't start. He's got it in his head that Costa can still play and Bernadette along with Livings will cure our OL woes. It's all about continuity not upgrading the position.

Except Garrett said the other day he was looking to the draft for competition on the OL, and made it sound like he was talking about more than one position.

Which is absurd. Guards don't help Centers, in fact it's the other way around. Centers get in on combo blocks with the guards.
