I gotta say, we let this game slip away. This is one that we should have won. We WILL look back at this game later in the season and wish we won this one.
Now with that said, there is a lot to be positive about moving forward.
For me, the thing that stood out most was our lack of pre snap penalties. Those have been our Achilles heal for years and years. I only remember a single false start. That is a drastic improvement over previous years and under many previous coaches. Kudos to Shotty for finally cracking down on those drive killers!
On the topic of Shotty, he had this team ready to play in a manner that we almost never saw under MM. He said he wanted to run the ball more. I thought it was all smoke and mirrors and that he was gonna throw all game. But he stayed true to his word and ran the ball like he said he wanted to!
The run game? That was a huge question coming into this season that I honestly thought we did not do enough to address. However, I am pleasantly surprised by Williams and his production. 2 TD’s? Gotta love that. We haven’t seen that in awhile.
As for Sanders, he had a nice break away run, then got run down from behind. He looked slow as hell! Hopefully J Blue can replace him and give us some speed. Because Sanders ain’t it. He needs to go.
The O-Line? Well look at them go. They played nicely together for their first time having all of them on the field together at the same time and as a single unit. I look forward to seeing how they play after they have had a few games together to gel as a unit. And Booker? I like this kid and love to see the nastiness that this group seem to be playing with.
Our corners SHUT DOWN Phillies receiving core. And that is a major accomplishment. I look forward to seeing this unit throughout the season. Assuming they can stay healthy.
My only downside this game is obviously the receiving core. CeeDee and his drops? That shit can’t happen. Especially after the contract he received. I like that they are getting Turpin more time on offense. I need to see more of that.
Same goes for Pickens. I was really hoping he was going to have more of a role this game. Hopefully that changes moving forward. He and CeeDee can end up as the top duo in the league.
We held Barkley to 60 yards. Considering he was the reigning rushing champ and should have been the MVP last season that is a major improvement in our run stopping ability. Unfortunately we didn’t have an answer for stopping Hurts from running.
All in all I like what I’m seeing and I look forward to what this season may bring.
Hopefully this season can reignite my enthusiasm for this team that the ass kicking in the Green Bay playoff game completely extinguished!
