The new substance-abuse policy ends the practice of imposing suspensions on players who test positive for marijuana or other non-PEDS. However, that protection doesn’t extend to players who have been suspended for more than a year and then reinstated.

For the same reason Smith didn’t receive an automatic reinstatement under the revamped policy, he also doesn’t benefit from the broad elimination of suspensions under it. Per the plain terms of the new policy, he remains subject to another indefinite ban for any violation of the policy or his specific treatment plan.

Which means that, in theory, one positive test can get him suspended for another year, at a minimum.

Whether and to what extent the league aggressively implements suspensions under this provision remains to be seen. Even before the substance-abuse policy was revised, it seemed that the NFL was less willing to throw the book at players who had been suspended and reinstated and more willing to help them remain in the league.

The goal of the revised substance-abuse policy was to get out of the knee-jerk suspension business and to get into the business of helping players who may be suffering from dependency issues. The problem with the revised policy is that, as written, it doesn’t extend the same treatment to players who were on the outside looking in when the policy was revised.

Aldon Smith earned his second chance Wednesday, with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell granting the edge rusher’s reinstatement application.

The Cowboys continue to await word on edge rusher Randy Gregory.

The team hopes Smith and Gregory can fill a pass rushing need opposite DeMarcus Lawrence, where the now-departed Robert Quinn led the team with 11.5 sacks last season.

Gregory missed the entire 2019 season while indefinitely suspended.

“We are working through the process,” Peter Schaffer, Gregory’s agent, told PFT. “We are very happy for Aldon and wish him all the luck in the world and successful resumption of his career. It’s refreshing to see the NFL following through on their stated goal to focus more of rehabbing players than punishing players.”

Although the new Collective Bargaining Agreement ends the policy of suspending players for positive marijuana tests, it does not provide amnesty for players like Gregory who were serving suspensions at the time the new CBA was adopted. So he still needs approval from the commissioner.

Gregory, 27, is serving his fourth suspension for violation of the NFL’s substances of abuse policy. His last reinstatement came July 17, 2018, and he played the entire 2018 season.

His last game came in Week 17 of 2018.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones repeatedly has expressed his support for Gregory.

The Cowboys made Gregory a second-round choice in 2015. But he has played only 28 games over three seasons, making 45 tackles and seven sacks.

ceedee-lamb-sets-record-straight-on-picking.jpg

There has been a lot of talk about whether Cowboys owner Jerry Jones pressured first-round draft pick CeeDee Lamb to wear Dallas' famed No. 88 jersey.

Now the rookie wide receiver is setting the record straight. Lamb shared Thursday that it was his choice to pick No. 88.

”I had the option of 10 or 88 and I picked 10,” Lamb said, according to Jeff Cavanaugh of 105.3 The Fan in Dallas. “Then I went more in depth of the situation and the tradition and how much that number means to the organization and it was kinda like why not keep that tradition going.”

When asked if he was pressured by Jones, Lamb said: “Nah, nah, not at all.”

So there you have it.

Lamb, who was the 17 overall pick, joins legends Drew Pearson, Michael Irvin and Dez Bryant as big-name receivers to wear the Dallas Cowboys No. 88 jersey.

If Lamb can live up to the expectations this number represents, he’ll have done his team proud, indeed.

CeeDee Lamb is carrying on the tradition of being a big-time wide receiver for the Dallas Cowboys wearing jersey No. 88. And he is not taking that responsibility lightly.

Lamb wore Nos. 9 and 2 at Oklahoma, but he had his choice of jersey with the Cowboys after being taken No. 17 overall in the draft. He initially picked jersey No. 10 but then switched to 88.

Lamb talked about the number during an interview with 105.3 The Fan’s “G-Bag Nation” on Thursday:

“I had the option of picking of 10 or 88, and then I picked 10. Then I kind of went more in-depth, understanding the situation and tradition, and how much (88) means to the organization. And the great legends and what they’ve with that number, it’s kind of like, why not keep the tradition going? Just trying to keep the legacy of 88 going in Dallas.”

There was talk that Jerry Jones was pushing Lamb to wear the number , which would make sense considering Jones is more acutely aware of the significance of the number. Franchise stud wide receivers Drew Pearson, Michael Irvin and Dez Bryant have all worn it.

Lamb eventually chose 88 and says he talked to “The Playmaker” about it:

“I called Mike Irvin right before everything got announced. We talked about the tradition and the respect I have for him and that number, and how much of an edge he’s given me while wearing that number … how much of a goal and dream that I have … when I look down and see 88, it’s kind of a reminder. When I see 88, it’s going to remind me of who wore it before me.”

Lamb had 62 catches for 1,327 yards and 14 touchdowns at Oklahoma last season. He should fare well in Dallas’ offense. And the Cowboys know how lucky they were to land him.

ATTN: Dodger ... View Discretion Advised

Gallup's balance is better coming out of cuts, looks stronger

Dez has quicker hands now and doesn't look like he's favoring the foot anymore

I doubt the Boys' invite him to camp ... he'd make the team and play

it would have been good to see Cooper out there too

Bradlee Anae
Dorance Armstrong
Ron'Dell Carter
Tyrone Crawford
Randy Gregory
Ladarius Hamilton
Joe Jackson
Jalen Jelks
DeMarcus Lawrence
Aldon Smith

all of them will go to camp heathy with new coaches :)

looking at that list, I'd have a hard time cutting/trading Crawford (he's the only one of them who can play RC/LC/D3)

Smith and Anae may have to seriously impress for them to move on from Crawford

my game day 4 are Gregory, Lawrence, Smith, and Crawford

maybe I'm giving Smith a bit too much credit … if he's 75% of what he once was … he'll make an impact

note, I think Armstrong, Anae, and Jackson makes this team - Jackson has the highest ceiling of the 3

Gallup wasn’t in that video. You might be mistaking Fred Brown from the Broncos was Gallup.

Thanks for that Cup. It certainly went a long way to helping me change my mind. Pay the man.

I thought for sure you'd point out how often in the routes they were running, the receivers had to wait on the ball after they came to a stop where the ball was supposed to go

I did notice that. It’s as if Dak waits for them to make their break before he releases the ball.

I did notice that and it's pretty much the only way I was certain Dak was throwing the rock because I didn't see him in the clip. You'd think he'd work on that timing in practice but whatever. I'm pretty much done with Dak. If the Cowboys sign him, so be it and I'll root for the guy and hope for the best. But I'm under no illusions.

Just curious if this was an epiphany for you. You've never noticed that in the games?

No it’s not new. It’s just very obvious when there is no defender.

That’s what I don’t get. It’s not like the pass is going to get intercepted. It’s the perfect time for him to practice throwing to guys before they make their break.

I still think about the first drive against the Packers where we were taking the O to them and they had no answer and Dak throws BEHIND Cooper heading to the post for 7 and ball gets picked...changed the whole dynamic of the game...that throw still pisses me off

How retarded is a Zoner?

1) Bring back Wade Phillips now as DC
2) We will miss Jason Garrett
3) Cut Dak, just go with Andy Dalton at QB
4) Trade away most of draft to get Jamal Adams
5) Zeke is fat and a waste of roster space, cut him
6) Kris Richard was a good coach
7) Re-sign Dez Bryant
8) Jerry won 3 super bowls as a GM
9) Jaylon Smith could easily be replaced by an undrafted rookie LB in the starting lineup.
10) Sacks and ints matter, unless you are a dumbass Zoner promoting the Cowboys signing or trading for a player with a big name they love, that doesnt get sacks or ints currently.

my thoughts:

1) Bring back Wade Phillips now as DC and sign von miller and demarcus ware and talib and harris and

2) We will miss Jason Garrett's epic throwing contests after practice... titans battled for braggings rights as the rest of the team sat and ate orange slices

3) Cut Dak, just go with Andy Dalton at QB and put Dak as a backup Wing T running back. fuck it lets get crazy

4) Trade away most of draft to get Jamal Adams and finally have the safety we NEED but dont WANT

5) Zeke is fat and a waste of roster space, cut him some slack.. zeke hasnt had elite breakaway speed since his head grew 4 sizes in a single offseason

6) Kris Richard was a good coach to practice only 1 type of technique with his DBs. EXECUTE EXECUTE EXECUTE.

7) Re-sign Dez Bryant to host tailgating cookouts at the Star, sponsored by Geico Homeowners Insurance and Gorilla Glue

8) Jerry won 3 super bowls as a GM and never could find jimmy's jock strap... nevermind carry it.

9) Jaylon Smith could easily be replaced by an undrafted rookie LB in the starting lineup. Jaylon should have been smelted and combined with LVE last year, then repoured into a mold of dexter coakley. there will be surplus materials so you can probably make 2 or 3 dexter coakleys. now youre cookin with gas, fellas

10) Sacks and ints matter, unless you are a dumbass Zoner promoting the Cowboys signing or trading for a player with a big name they love, that doesnt get sacks or ints currently. jeff heath did not die on the cross for this
