The Cowboys have hired former NFL quarterback Scott Tolzien as an assistant coach, Mike Fisher of 105.3 The Fan reports.

Tolzien 32, most recently worked as an analyst scouting opponents for Wisconsin.

Tolzien played for new Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy for three seasons in Green Bay. Tolzien made two starts and appeared in four other games from 2013-15 with the Packers.

He last played in the NFL in 2017 with the Colts and then spent time with the Birmingham Iron of the Alliance of American Football a year ago.

Doug Nussmeier will serve as the Cowboys’ quarterbacks coach, replacing Jon Kitna. Nussmeier spent the past two seasons as the Cowboys’ tight ends coach.

He’s just as experienced as Helen Moore was when he became the QB coach

He should work out just fine

Dallas letting Quinn walk after one season?

13652598.jpg

The Dallas Cowboys struck gold last offseason by acquiring edge rusher Robert Quinn. Now coming off an outstanding season, the Cowboys are reportedly prepared to lose Quinn to free agency.

According to ESPN’s Todd Archer, the Cowboys are likely going to let Quinn walk this offseason with the pass rusher heading for a lucrative contract. The 29-year-old defensive end led the team with 11.5 sacks and recorded 22 quarterback hits in 14 games.

Quinn missed the first two games of the season for violating the NFL’s performance-enhancing drug policy. He also missed the preseason with a broken hand, which cost him a chance to get fresh before the season.

While Quinn has been inconsistent and dealt with injuries throughout his NFL career, he will enter 2020 with 80.5 career sacks in 125 games.

Given what he demonstrated this past season and the need for pass rushers across the NFL, Quinn will receive plenty of lucrative offers this offseason.

The Cowboys have been working to put together their assistant coaching staff since hiring Mike McCarthy as their new head coach earlier this month and the team formally announced 19 of those coaches on Monday.

Many of the names on the list have already been reported. Offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, defensive coordinator Mike Nolan and special teams coach John Fassel are some of the bigger names on that list.

The Cowboys named Rob Davis their assistant head coach and former Vikings defensive coordinator George Edwards has been given the title of senior defensive assistant.

Offensive line coach Joe Philbin, assistant offensive line coach Jeff Blasko, wide receivers coach Adam Henry, running backs coach Skip Peete, quarterbacks coach Doug Nussmeier and tight ends coach Lunda Wells round out the offensive staff.

The other side of the ball includes defensive line coach Jim Tomsula, linebackers coach Scott McCurley, assistant defensive line coach Leon Lett, defensive backs coach Maurice Linguist and defensive backs coach Al Harris. Matt Daniels will be the assistant special teams coach, Scott Tolzien will be a coaching assistant and Markus Paul will be the strength and conditioning coach.

I actually really like this staff outside of Moore. Here is hoping that they bring us some more wins!

The worst part about Romo is that we didn't even make an attempt to find his replacement. It's just this all or nothing attitude when it comes to the position.

Prescott wasnt an attempt to find his replacement? Romo was the starter when we drafted Prescott.

So far: Stevie still ball washing Garrett. And it sounds Jason "three yards and a cloud of dust " Witten may return.

I havent seen any evidence that Witten will be returning.

And what do you expect him to say about Garrett? Did you really believe he was gonna go out in public with "the guy sux donkey dick and we should have never extended him"

Being that before Moore was injured Dak was third string, and being that we tried to trade for McCown and Foles after Moore broke his leg, and being that Dak was only the backup to Romo because we didn't get Foles or McCown, looking back on it I'm not sure the Jones' ever intended for Dak to be the next guy.

Go back even further than that, Dak wasn't even someone we really wanted to draft. We wanted Lynch and at least one other, but they got picked out from under us so we settled for Dak.

Everything listed above verifies they didn't. They had no clue at all what they were doing.

It was Paxton Lynch and then we were a pick away from drafting Connor Cook who was drafted by the Raiders.

I was actually really bummed when we didn't get Cook because watching film on him, it seemed like he was a perfect fit for the offense we were running at the time. Of course Cook hasn't panned out, so I guess we dodged a bullet.

With Dak still on the board, both times. We never intended to even draft Dak, much less have him be the future franchise.

Two bullets - Lynch is a complete bust. Selected 1st round, 26th overall and spent last year on the Steelers' roster and interestingly, didn't see ANY playing time there last year through the carousel of scrub QBs they went through.

Dak was complete and total LUCK for the Jones boys, from draft day to multiple injuries to finally, Romo breaking for good. None of it planned or foreseen. As you said, never intended to be the next guy. At all. Ever.

Remember, Dak was a rising star around the time of the Senior Bowl and Combine and then had a DUI which killed all momentum he had. Even more luck for the Jones' as you said.

You "remember" it wrong. He was never a "rising star" to the point he might have gone in the 1st round. But the DUI is another element of luck in the Dak story - without that he might well have been taken before where we got him. Late 2nd round, tops.

Another piece of luck was our staff coaching him in the Sr. Bowl - might never have had him on our radar at all otherwise.

I just remember that Matt Miller who is B/R's draft guru was really high on him and saying that Dak was rising up draft boards, but again that didn't matter because of the DUI.

The Football Gods gave the Jones boys a freebie - four years not having to pay for a QB... and they completely botched it! Now they're gonna fuck totally up and marry the guy long-term, for ridiculous millions, without finding out what the real actual market for him is.

He was high on Lynch too. So what. He was never going to go in the 1st round. Late 2nd maybe, but more likely early to mid third. His DUI dropped him to where we could get him, that's a fair enough point.

And for what reason? It isn't like Dak is all that great, so the idea of paying him 40 mil a year because he is a nice guy is just dumb.
