Your post really shows how shallow our roster truly is. The one everyone touts as "soooo talented." Clearly it's not. This is why I keep pointing out there's a roster overhaul coming.

I think dbair pretty much agrees. Or has come 'round to it.

Then I expect an apology from him for arguing with me. But don't tell him anything, let's see if he does it without being nudged.....

I think the disagreement was in the severity of your assessment of the roster, you're far more dire on it than even me.

I pretty much echoed your assessment. But I guess it's just harsh if it comes from me. In any event, I can see why he wouldn't think we can upgrade from Heath. Those are huge shoes to fill and I wasn't talking about players of his caliber.

You know... I was just pointing out that our roster overall really isn't any better or any worse than 20 other teams out of the 32. The cap, free agency and parity tend to spread the mediocrity around pretty evenly. The 12 teams with the better rosters have better talent evaluators. I'm hoping McCarthy is a better evaluator.

Everyone keeps saying its a talented roster for a reason, it's because it is.

Some guys under-performed, but you cannot discount bad coaching as a primary reason for that. There's a reason great coaches get more out of average to above average rosters.

Several people that cover the league have noted some NFL people believe the current Dallas roster is more talented than any team McCarthy coached in GB. Randall Cobb just said the exact same thing and he was actually THERE.

There is going to be some roster churning, there always is. There are going to be guys we let walk that need to be replaced. There's a handful of positions that could use a significant upgrade (like DT and S). We're likely to have a new kicker and punter next year. But the idea that there is going to be a mass overhaul from top down is utter bullshit.

Offensively the only new starters might be at LG (where Conner McGovern might get a chance to win that in a position battle with Conner Williams) and TE. FB is another position I think we might see a change, as Olawale is not the type of FB McCarthy employed in GB (in fact Olawale isnt a FB at all)

Defensively several spots will clearly be open. One DE spot, one or perhaps both DT spots, one LB spot and depending on what they do with Byron Jones, a CB spot and competition for the safety spots.

So you're saying that basically most of the D needs to be replaced. And those same people that have been pimping all this talent just picked Smith to go to the Pro Bowl; I'd say their evaluation skills just suck.

In any event, we lack talent at the skill positions. No all, but many. That's not a talented team. Most talented teams have a #1 pass rusher and CB. And, of course, a QB. But I won't go there right now. I trust McCarthy will give him a fair shot.

It's adequate. In this age of Cap, FA and parity. There's some talented players. Depth is shit though. Pure shit.

Like 19 other teams out there.

I'm assuming Smith got in due to injuries of others. But remember there's 3 levels of voting for the probowl now too (coaches, players and fans each have 1/3 weight)

He definitely had a better year last year than this year, I still think he may have played with an injury all yr because his movement didn't seem as explosive or as fluid this year, hopefully it's not just a worsening of the injury he had from college.

I do think we need some talent updating/upgrades at a few spots. Defensively, we obviously need a healthy LVE and Jaylon Smith too, otherwise that's two other problem areas. I am hoping a new coaching staff and DB coach can help fix Awuzie, who looked like he might be a really good player as a rookie but regressed badly under Richard. Byron Jones can cover but doesnt make enough plays IMO to warrant a huge deal, will be interesting to see how the team views him. if he stays, at the very least he is a solid starter. I do think they need to have Heath and Woods in backup roles (which they'd be fine at IMO, that would be quality depth). I think Lee retires so we'll probably need one OLB (and depending on scheme, if we decided to move to a 3-4 you might need two LB's. They gotta address DT. I think Collins is worth keeping if the price is right, but the other spot needs serious attention. DLaw is a good player but if Quinn walks we'll need another pass rusher for sure. I also think they need an every down TE, although I do think Jarwin has a lot of upside for McCarthy's passing game. He just isnt much of a blocker. Might need a legit FB.

You said we need help at the skills spots, but I think we have exceptional RB's and WR's, and I know you have doubts of Prescott but at the bare minimum he is a quality starter. I do have hopes that McCarthy's QB expertise and system will lead to even more improved play from Prescott though. I also think we're set at OL for the most part.

Not much I'd change on that list. Maybe put Maliek Collins in the same category as Bennett/Quinn.

Use the Transition tag instead of the franchise tag on Dak.

So what are your thoughts on our current free agents??

So here is something I was kicking around to a few of my friends (with not much support). Let’s see what you guys think. Once the new Salary Cap is announced I believe it’s going to be much higher that it was this season. I believe when that happens there will be no need to franchise Dak. They will just sign him to $35-$40 mil a season.

Now here is what I was thinking... franchise Amari Cooper. Trade him to Cleveland for ODB. Beckham is signed through 2023 (UFA IN 2024) with a cap bit of $15 mil per season. Under the new cap numbers that should be more than reasonable. You then also retain Cobb. That still gives the team a very formidable WR corp.

Also what do you guys think about adding Zach Ertz?

I can see why the lack of support. I'm trying to figure this out.

Why exactly should Dallas trade Cooper for that WR? What's the point there? For a lower Salcap hit? But pay Dak that much? I don't get it.

As far as I know Ertz is still under contract through next season. I doubt Philly trades him to the Cowboys.

My mistake on Ertz. Not sure why I was thinking he was free.
