The Giants are reportedly not planning to fire head coach Pat Shurmur before the end of the 2019 season, but all options remain on the table after the season is over.

And while the club may be inclined to keep Shurmur if for no other reason than to maintain continuity for young QB Daniel Jones , that could change should Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett becomes available.

Garrett has been on the hot seat several times during his Cowboys tenure but has still managed to hold onto his post since he was given the permanent title in 2011. However, his contract is up at the end of this season, and owner Jerry Jones has not offered a ringing endorsement of his sideline general this year.

Jones is said to be fond of Oklahoma head coach Lincoln Riley, and even if he can’t get Riley, he may finally decide to move on from Garrett if the Cowboys (6-4) do not make a deep postseason run.

And if the Cowboys do part ways with Garrett, the Giants could be there to pounce. Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network (video link) says Big Blue has emerged as a legitimate landing spot for Garrett, and the Giants would be Garrett’s top choice if he can’t stick with Dallas.

Rapoport reminds us that, in 2014, when New York was deciding whether or not to move on from head coach Tom Coughlin, the club would have fired Coughlin if it could have gotten Garrett. But Garrett signed an extension with the Cowboys, so the Giants held on to Coughlin.

Garrett has compiled an 85-66 mark as a head coach, including a 2-3 postseason record. Shurmur, meanwhile, is 17-42 as a head coach.

The Dallas Cowboys have continued to show support for Jason Garrett publicly, and they may decide to give the head coach a contract extension after the season if they don’t want to risk losing him to a division rival.

The Giants are Garrett’s “preferred destination” if the Cowboys choose to part ways with him, Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports. Rapoport adds that the Giants would have fired Tom Coughlin back in 2014 if they could have landed Garrett, but Garrett signed an extension with Dallas.

We wouldn't even need to fire him. His contract is up - the Gnats can just make him an offer!

Mike Fisher and another NFL reporter are saying they 100% believe this story was planted by Garrett people.

On the radio after the game they are claiming this is one of the reasons Jones didn't mince his words about the coaching today.

My first thought was that it was planted by Jones people.

See guys, Garrett is a coveted coach.

Planted by Garrett's people? If so then he's not doing himself any favors. That alone would be reason to let him walk. A guaranteed lifetime 8-8 divisional rival.

I think they are suggesting Garrett's people planted the Giants story to sway Jones' opinion of letting him walk after the season.

Feel really confident that Garrett will not be an NFL HC ever again.

There are plenty of basement level teams that would absolutely LOVE to go 8-8 each year

He will coach again in the NFL
Book it!

I do not think the Gnats are that stupid although I certainly hope they are.

I'm listening to WFAN in NY this morning. The hosts and callers want NO part of Garrett, so naturally Jerry will re-sign a guy not in demand.

I remember when Jimmy did something like that with Jacksonville

Those basement teams do not have the talent the Cowboys have, so by adding Garrett, they wouldn't be an 8-8 team, but worse still.

Garrett has been 8-8 his entire career regardless of the talent level of the team

Yep and NFL teams sure do crave that kind of mediocrity.

His future is coaching a non-elite college team and back in some type of administrative role with the Cowboys two or three years down the road when the dust settles.

No one wants Garrett to be their head coach. He is not respected by other organizations. His record against winning teams is laughable. His record in elimination games is even worse. He's a likable human being but offers very little as a head coach at this level.

For some perennial 1-15/2-14 teams going 8-8 would be a god send and sell tickets

Some shitty team will employ Garrett

We as Cowboy fans hate him because we expect more from our team

Other teams would kill to have our 2 decades of mediocrity when they have been the bottom of the NFL barrel for decades

All GMs and owners know Garrett sucks as a coach.

You want to have it both ways. You want to say Garrett sucks but at the same time you seem to think he's a good enough coach to get a longtime cellar dweller to 8-8 on a regular basis.

You can't have your carrot cake and eat it too. You're using the same failed argument you had on Dez. And yeah, Dez eventually got signed but your stated fear was he would come back to haunt us and torch us. You were saying he sucked but feared someone would sign him and we would rue the day.

Stop it. It's circular illogic.

NOOOOOO!

We hate him because we know HE is what holds us back on a daily basis! We have specific facts and evidence posted here to prove it! We also know what to expect from a REAL COACH.
