Brian Hoyer is free to compete for a starting job in another NFL city.

The Texans have released the veteran quarterback, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported, via a source informed of the situation.

Shortly after Houston handed the offensive reins to Brock Osweiler, Rapoport reported the organization and Hoyer were headed for an amicable divorce.

Unable to find a trade partner, the Texans opted to set Hoyer free with the offseason program beginning on Monday.

Hoyer posted a respectable 91.4 passer rating last season, while leading the Texans to five wins in ten games.

It was evident, however, that he failed to gain the full trust of the coaching staff and front office. Benched three quarters into the first game of the season, Hoyer was on a short leash the rest of the way, overseeing an offense that was overly reliant on gadget plays. After Hoyer's meltdown in the Wild Card Round loss to the Chiefs, owner Bob McNair essentially mandated that he be replaced at quarterback.

Rapoport told Dan Hellie of NFL Total Access late last month that Hoyer was expected to be on the Broncos' list of potential targets after losing Osweiler. In a holding pattern with free agent Ryan Fitzpatrick, the Jets are also believed to be interested.

After 43 career games across six seasons, Hoyer has proven to be a high-end NFL backup. As long as teams are desperate for a quarterback, though, he will have the opportunity to compete for the QB1 role.

I think Hoyer would be a really good signing to be a back up in Dallas. He's the exact type of QB they should be looking at as the long term answer at backup QB.

Eh, I hope not

You can't focus too much on that last playoff game. Overall he's been good enough to be considered as a long term answer as some teams backup QB.

We'll see. Several teams need backup QB's (including us) and apparently nobody offered even a ham sandwich for this guy.

Why would anyone trade for him when they could wait for him to be cut. The same thing will happen with Foles and McCown.

I'm not going to pretend to know anything about Hoyer. I don't watch the Texans. Winning 5 games and a 91 QB rating is impressive. Then again, I think Weeden went' 2-1 with them and had a pretty decent QB rating also and our coaches couldn't get him to do anything here.

Honestly, and I hate to beat a dead horse, but I think our offense is so bad, so predictable, and so unimaginative that I don't think it really matters who our back up is... because we rely so heavily on Romo-magic.

Did Romo pick Demarco Murray up and carry him in, around and through defenses in 2014 too?

This makes me sick. Hoyer is one of the worst starting QBs I've ever seen. Tiny with a tiny arm -- only thing he can possibly claim to have is some "moxie" or toughness or whatever. But he's horrible. And on top of that he seems to think he's good and almost has a little entitlement to him.

If you have any doubt, find some lowlights of that Texans playoff game last year. I don't know if there's ever been a worse QB playoff performance in NFL history.

Yeah, let's get another shit QB on the roster so our QB guru Wade Wilson can work his magic and make an already shit QB into a winless, hapless, dickless QB.

No. That year the offense focused heavily on the run game. 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015 we didn't.

One of these things is not like the others.

Hoyer lets me play a down-and-distance game that Linehan leans on
. Take shots downfield. Then get my money's worth from the RBs

.

The biggest ironic tragedy is you just described Kellen Moore just as much as Hoyer. And still there is this option for Moore bc he knows the offense.

I'll take Hoyer or Foles (once released). Anything is better than Kellen Moore.

But lets be real, these guys are backups for a reason. Good for a game or two. If we'd have to lean on any of them for an extended period of time then we're screwed. Our coaches, running game, and defense isn't strong enough to make it without Romo. We seen that last year.
