Actually I go a little further back on that, to the '83 draft where Tex tried like hell to work out a deal to get either Elway or Marino, since Tom was already quite disenchanted with Danny White.

Gil Brandt claimed it was Elway. Then again, Brandt claims that about virtually every top pick made for a 10 yr period or so starting in the mid 70's
We didn't need to trade up for Marino. He was available and we passed on him to take Jim Jeffcoat.
Ultimately even though we had some tough yrs in mid to late 80's I'm glad it worked out the way it did, because Aikman was the ultimate winner and Marino was the ultimate stat whore who played small in most of his big games.
