Despite playing all backups (save Costa), Dallas played pretty well even against the Miami starters, who they used on at least 2 or 3 series on both sides of the ball. There were alot of things to be enouraged about but there are still some questions too. Alot of tough decisions to make about the 53 man roster, and we'lll definitely be letting go of a few guys who will play elsewhere.

1) I've always liked Steven McGee. I think he plays hard, by all accounts he is a great kid. Unfortunately he's in his 4th yr, and he really doesnt look all that different now than he did 2 or 3 seasons ago. He almost assuredly isnt going to develop into a starting QB and at best is probably a career #3 guy. To me that means he probably isnt going to be here come later today. Best of luck to him though if he does end up elsewhere.

2) We have a really good problem at RB. Murray is on his way to being a bonafide star. Tanner and Dunbar both looked outstanding last night, and Tanner had looked outstanding last preseason too. Olawale has shown alot in the preseason. Felix Jones has been a good solid player when he has been healthy. Thats 5 RB's. I doubt they keep more than 3, although 4 would seem possible especially when you consider Murray and Jones' injury history. We know though that Detroit called asking about Felix Jones. I wouldnt trade him there (because of what I stated last night, we dont need to be helping Detroit) but if there was an AFC team we could trade him to and we could get good value, it might be worth doing.

3) I think Orie Lemon, Mana Silva and Mario Butler wrapped up roster spots last night. Lemon IMO has outplayed Dan Connor during the preseason. Shaun Chapas looks improved a great deal too. His run blocking was pretty impressive, he displayed good hands out of the backfield again and he was on all the special teams units that I saw. He may not end up making our 53, but I bet he has shown enough that someone will definitely claim him and he might even warrant somebody giving us a late rd pick for via trade.

4) Really going to be tough calls with Matt Johnson and Danny Coale. I wish they could IR Johnson, but Coale is healthy and is playing decently now. He made a sensational one handed catch last night and as Michael Irvin mentioned, having a 3rd WR that can work the middle areas of the field is something that can really help an offense. I dont think Johnson or Coale would clear waivers, somebody would probably nab them.

5) CMD isnt going to like this, but Phil Costa looked pretty good to me. His shotgun snaps were crisp and accurate (and didnt have that delay thing going like last yr) and he definitely appears bigger and more physical. Obviously he only played a couple or maybe three series last night in a preseason game, but he definitely looked better to me.

6) The OL in general looked good last night. There were a couple plays where they allowed some pressure but the run blocking was superb, even when our backups were going against the Miami starters. Everyone thought Bill Callahan and Jerome Hnederson (DB coach) were key additions, and judgding from the week to week improvement of the OL and the much improved play by our DB's, looks like people were right.

7) Not seeing the Clifton Geathers thing. He looks like a classic JAG.

8) The WR position as a group is similar to the RB position now. After having tons of question marks all offseason and early TC, it appears we have quite a few guys past Bryant and Austin who can legtimately play. Ogletree has looked really good at times, but he had two bad plays to start the game last night (including his 2nd drop in as many weeks) and if he continues that, he wont be the 3rd WR for long. Like Beasley's upside and potential as a true slot guy and Harris has had a great camp. Harris also adds the benefit of being able to serve as a KO and PR guy.

9) Dan Bailey gives us a huge advantage in close games. He's about as automatic as it gets and has great range as well. Last year they thought he couldnt be a regular kickoff guy and when he did do it, he was good at it. This year he's just booming his kickoffs. Looks like his leg in stronger. The P situation I wasnt worried about until last night, and Jones did not have a good game. Shorted 2 or 3 kicks and plunked one in the endzone from the Fins side of the field. Kinda wondering how safe his spot is, especially with McBriar available again and several other good prospects likely to be out after final cutdowns.

10) Marcus Spears was the one guy who DNP that kinda opened my eyes. Either he absolutely had his roster spot sewed up (which is not what we were hearing) or perhaps they held him out because they are going to trade him. IMO he's better than Coleman and makes more plays than he does, but apparently the coaches dont see it that way.

Does anyone know the officials rules for the IR?

If we place Johnson on the IR what happens? Does that allow other teams to pick him up, like what happened w killa?

I didn't see Dunbar but I disagree that Olawale has shown alot. All he's shown is that he's not afraid of contact and he'll drive. Noone is keeping a RB on the roster with feet like his.

miami only played a handful of starters. Smith, misi and I think one lineman.

it was backups everywhere for them. I am pretty sure the whole offensive line was backups except for rookie martin.

same on the defensive line, all backups.

I agree on spears. I hope he makes the team.

it seems andre holmes is a good blocker on special teams and in the running game at wr...so is harris.
I figured coale would make it easily over holmes.....Now I am not so sure...Sam hurd hung on for years by blocking well outside and making tackles on special teams...not sure holmes will make tackles on special teams but he blocks well in the return game.

The team likes dunbar apparently. I have to laugh because skip peete referred to him as charlie garner like at the beginning of camp and said he is a guy who could have a role in the offense in different packages.....that is exactly how ciskowski and garrett initially described felix jones, like charlie garner and can be used in a role.........funny to me.

I am very skeptical on mana silva.....he shows up here and there in the passing game but if he is on the field and needs to tackle I am just not sure how he does it in the running game.....We will already have a safety in danny mcray who is essentially a special teams player......I dont think this roster can handle two........

Safety is a spot I am searching high and low for someone to come in here off waivers.

guard is another position. Leary spent the whole camp at right guard when he is more comfortable at left guard......Sham said again last night that he is going to get red shirted, which means make the team and then be inactive every game like arkin last year and free in 07.

Im sorry I just dont see how you can keep dockery, arkin or loper and put them in a game....I think they are all poor. Arkin needs more time.....He has to make the roster though because of what he did at center........I really hope we find a guard on waivers.

the wr thing is really complicated just like defensive line....I dont think they want to lose coale and i hope they keep long term in mind and keep him........the problem is holmes has the uncoachables......
6"5 225 pounds......he looks like he needs time as a wr......Both stephen and jerry have talked about players from other rosters.......wr still might go the waiver route.....

I hope we keep spears.....Is a dilemma.....I would hate to cut coleman and have hatcher hurt in a week like always and be really young and light on the line......

our linebackers look the best they have looked since 93. Everyone can play. Everyone has a skill, they are all smart and athletic....this is a very good sign to me. No way we cut albright too valuable on gameday............

it seems like the key bubble guys are, spears, coleman, lemon, holmes, coale, silva, hamilton and chappas.....

It seems if we cut hamilton, coale or holmes they will be signed somewhere else....I have to imagine lemon will too. We played a lot of 4-2 fronts last night.

in 2006 we signed rocky boiman as a free agent much like we did dan connor this year, he got cut in camp, jerry was livid........I dont think connor gets cut this year.

maybe we go heavy at lb and use different fronts early till ratliff is healthy.

and finally, I didnt even think i would want to trade felix or jenkins this year...but now I have to say for the right price I would be very tempted......we need to wait for some team to get desperate for a corner to move jenkins.......

with felix I dont think he would bring much in return but if it was a 3 or 4 I might consider it...They seem to really like dunbar and he proved he could return punts and break tackles last night......

Now I know they wont do this because felix is the third down back and I dont think they want to add another problem to protection. It just feels like a move that would help the team down the road and makes all the sense in the world unless they think they can win big this year.

What's stopping teams from IRing players who aren't really hurt?

Like Holmes or Coale..so we don't have to risk losing them?

That's what mike shanahan did all the time but the league caught on to this. You can ir them once final cuts have been made. If you do it before that they go through waivers and other teams can claim the, like Nagy. That's why you never see a team ir a starter until after final cutdown even when they know they are done for the season

they changed the rules this morning....

trade deadline advanced to week 8 and you get an exception for one player on IR who can come off in the future.

maybe that is how we save johnson...

Do players have to agree to go on IR? I don't think so

Well.... if you IR someone who isn't injured, like you're suggesting, and the player doesn't agree with the move... what's to stop him from contacting the league and turning you in?

This allows teams to take a player off IR. how does this help him make th team? It doesn't open up an extra spot now

johnson has a hamstring injury and didnt dress last night....they could say it is a major injury......This is the stipulation it has to be a major injury....I have no idea how they define that.....

but him being on ir would open an active spot would it not?

According to BK, no. He would have to make the final 53 first. Then be placed on IR.. Then you can bring him back.

Otherwise, he has to clear waivers..which is the same thing as trying to put him on the PS

never said we should keep him on the active roster, but he's a big physical kid who showed good hands out of the backfield...he used to be a FB so you know he's also a willing blocker

he's a nice practice squad candidate IMO

Johnson will be cut. Not guessing. No reason to keep a slow big hitting in the box safety with church and Butler on the roster. Sorry Matt your white ass can't make the squad from the tub.

I just heard they changed the rules on trade deadline and IR maybe this helps us keep Johnson?
