Claiborne: ‘I feel like I’m a totally different player from when I first started camp’

IRVING – Expectations are high for Morris Claiborne even if he is entering his rookie season coming off wrist surgery and a knee injury.

After having the Cowboys trade up to draft him with the sixth overall pick in April, the former standout cornerback at LSU understands this. His expectations for himself are also high.

“They’re very high,” he said. “I’m going to go out and try to do my job. Keep working hard each and every day and go out and do my part.”

According to Claiborne, he’s finally healthy. Remaining that way is the next step on his journey of trying to duplicate his collegiate success at the NFL level.

“I feel like I’m taking strides each and every day,” Claiborne said. “I feel like I’m a totally different player from when I first started camp. That’s making progress and all I can do is go out each and every day working.”

Claiborne said he’s preparing to play in Wednesday night’s preseason finale, which is somewhat odd for a starter to do considering the Cowboys plan on resting most of their starters that night. But he said he wouldn’t mind the extra reps if the coaches will allow it.

Claiborne missed the Cowboys’ first preseason game and some of training camp with a sprained MCL. He also missed all of rookie mini-camp, organized team activities and mini-camp after having off-season wrist surgery.

But those injuries won’t matter once he hits the field Sept. 5 against the New York Giants. The Cowboys invested a top 10 draft pick and spent $50 million on Brandon Carr so the secondary could slow the New York passing attack. If Giants quarterback Eli Manning shreds the Dallas secondary like he did in 2011, averaging 373 passing yards per game, Carr and Claiborne are going to be questioned.

That puts a lot of pressure on a rookie. But Claiborne said he’s got an entire defense to help him shoulder the load.

“We got great players all around,” Claiborne said. “They got Brandon and traded up to get me but we also got great players around us. All we can do is just come in together. It’s not going to take (just) me and Brandon, it’s going to take everybody as one. All of us have to come together to try to get the job done.”

How? He has practiced for two weeks.

He looks like a player and getting work against rivers and Bradford is good work.

Next Wednesday will be an eye opening experience. I hope he holds up.

Why do you lack faith in the youngster? Did you see that play he made in the endzone?

I like his confidence. I like the fact that he plays the ball not react to the wr like newman and jenkins at times. He isnt arrogant but at the same time hes confident in his skills. what was a weakness last yr (secondary) is going to be a strength this yr.

i just think there are going to be some tough spots and I dont think he has really been tested.

the rams tried there a little but bradford was so bad the other night I am not sure he could have hit water if he fell out of a boat.....

hopefully that was because of the coverage and pressure.

you can tell claiborne has all the tools though.......interested to see him run with cruz, jackson and maclin though...

That play in the end zone was tight. Just stayed in the hip pocket and broke on the route just right. We've rarely seen that recently and he's doing it in some of his first action where he's out there not knowing half of what he should be doing. Talent.

True. He looks quite talented. He also seems to have the RKG thing going for him.

when he talks to the media he reminds of a young ware in 05.....just seems to have his head in the right place and really presents himself well.

He got lucky on that first one. By the time he located the ball, it was past him. Someone like Nicks will not drop it.

That iso shot on him on the first clip shows how smooth he is. He just glides out there... looks like he's not even trying.

To be fair, I'm pretty sure no one here could have named a Rams receiver other than Amendola going into that game.

For what the Cowboys gave up in draft picks (and willingness to ignore the offensive line issues), Claiborne will have to be stellar for many years, and not just the typical 1st round failure that we're used to seeing around here.

We only gave up one pick to move up to get him.

That is peanuts.

The colts just gave up a two and 6 for vontae Davis..........

That 2 from Indy will be like a late first most likely.

Think about that, Davis is an up and down player and has two seasons before he needs a contract.

If he ends up being an excellent player no one will care about that two ever.

That one pick could have been Konz, who will most likely be a very serviceable center for the next decade. We are clearly in dire need of a center right now, no matter how much homers wanna pump Costa

If Claiborne pans out, then this isn't even an issue, but if he turns into the CB version of Shante Carver, then it'll be even more of a tragedy than just busting out on a 1st rounder.
