Day two notes from Brandon George

Here’s what stood out from Day 2 of Cowboys’ training camp practices Friday in Oxnard, Calif.
The Cowboys had a second consecutive light practice Friday to begin training camp with the offensive and defensive units still not going against each other in drills.

QB Tony Romo didn’t practice during the evening practice on the second day of camp, choosing to play it safe before the players put on the pads Saturday for the first time. Romo watched about the first 45 minutes of the evening practice from the sideline in a blue Cowboys “FIGHT” T-shirt and in shorts before leaving the field toward the locker room area.

QB Brandon Weeden led the Cowboys’ first team in the evening practice, though most of the workout was individual drills.
Defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli was just as fired up on Day 2 of training camp practices as he was the first day Thursday. He was constantly yelling at the defensive linemen: “Speed, more speed.”

Marinelli saw progress from DT Henry Melton in one drill as he urged the free agent addition to use more speed: “Not quite there yet, but I’m starting to see it.”

Injured DE Anthony Spencer spent some time working on the resistance cords during the evening practice as he continues his recovery from Oct. 1 microfracture surgery on his left knee.

Several Cowboys cheerleaders watched the early part of the evening practice from a tent-covered area near the practice fields as they get ready to perform at the opening ceremony to kick off training camp Saturday afternoon.

The competition for the starting MLB spot will really start to heat up Saturday when the pads come on. For now, Justin Durant is the first-team MLB, DeVonte Holloman is second team and Orie Lemon is third team. But that could change whenever Rolando McClain practices for the first time.

The safeties depth chart the first two practices: First-teamers are Barry Church and J.J. Wilcox; second-team: Jakar Hamilton and Jeff Heath; third-team Matt Johnson and Ahmad Dixon.

Special teams coordinator Rich Bisaccia watched as RB Lance Dunbar, WR Terrance Williams, WR Devin Street and WR Dwayne Harris field punts.

S Barry Church dropped an interception in a drill while he was back-peddling. The balls were thrown high, but Church couldn’t bring it down.

LB Bruce Carter let a high ball go off his hands in a linebacker drill where the players changed directions quickly and had to catch a pass coming right at them while on the run.

The cornerbacks struggled to cleanly catch the ball during a drill in which the balls were being fired from a machine at about five yards away.

WR Dez Bryant and RB DeMarco Murray worked on the side at one point during the evening practice catching passes after flashing from behind a tackling dummy that blocked their view of the passer.

In a linebacker drill, coach Jason Garrett completed a high pass to defensive line assistant coach Leon Lett over LB Justin Durant. Assistant coaches ran routes against the linebackers to help them work on their pass coverage.

In the morning walk-through, RB DeMarco Murray bear-hugged WRs coach Derek Dooley from behind during a play in which Murray was rolling out to the right to block. He carried Dooley a few yards before letting him go, drawing some laughs from other offensive players.
Before the start of the morning walk-through, coach Jason Garrett yelled to the players, “Let’s get the tempo right.”
Nine Cowboys’ first-team offensive players wore their caps during the morning walk-through, and only QB Tony Romo had his facing forward. The five first-team defensive players who wore a cap in the morning walk-through also had their caps facing forward.
During the morning walk-through, coach Jason Garrett had the offense re-huddle. Some of the defensive players celebrated by yelling, “yeah.” LB Justin Durant broke into some sort of shimmy dance.
Garrett yelled at the second-team offense during the morning walk-through to get back in the huddle again, “Communicate the personnel.”

....and I just as this morning that Pettine said that Miles is their best receiver showing some good stuff in training camp. .

If that's true, get ready to see the Browns set a league record for offensive futility this year.

Saw a post in another forum where Babe Laufenberg is claiming Romo is having 4 hours of therapy a day on his back.

Babe also speculating that Romo wont play a single down in the preseason.

Romo himself alluded to as much, in a AP article I read this week.
OXNARD, Calif. (AP) — Tony Romo paused to add up how long it would take to coddle his surgically repaired back on the first day of training camp.

The final tally for the 34-year-old Dallas Cowboys quarterback was about four hours.

Romo isn't worried about getting hit. He thinks he can play several more years, even joking Thursday that he'll still be taking snaps when he's 45.

If we rush the passer better, the DB's as a whole (including the safeties) will look better.

Really think there's gonna be a lot of crow eating JJ Wilcox

JJ Wilcox is raw but has potential. He is crazy athletic and accelerates into contact. Ahmad Dixon looked way better than a 7th rounder during his junior year. Everyone else is suspect.

Day three observations from Brandon George

Here’s what stood out from Day 3 of Dallas Cowboys’ training camp practices Saturday in Oxnard, Calif.

The Dallas Cowboys had their first contact practice of training camp Saturday with the team allowed to wear pads after two ho-hum practices to start camp. There was no tackling (at least no on purpose).
QB Tony Romo participated in his first contact practice in seven months, but he wasn’t touched. The first nine plays of team drills with Romo under center were all runs. Later in team drills, Romo was 2-for-4 passing and he completed 7-of-8 passes in 7-on-7 drills.
DT Henry Melton, the club’s biggest free agent addition of the offseason, didn’t participate in team drills.
Fireworks came early in the evening practice. In 1-on-1 drills, CB Morris Claiborne and WR Terrrance Williams went at each other. Claiborne was all over Williams as the ball arrived the first time the two went against each other. The next time up, Claiborne broke up a pass to Williams with his physical play and let Williams know about it. At one point, Claiborne yelled, “Bring Dez over here.” As Claiborne was walking away, Williams grabbed Claiborne from behind and got in his face with the two jawing at each for several seconds. Later, with other players going 1-on-1, Williams walked toward Claiborne screaming at him. Claiborne yelled back before Williams pushed him away. The two matched up again 1-on-1, and QB Tony Romo’s deep pass to Williams down the left sideline was a bit long and fell incomplete. Williams approached Claiborne again after the ball hit the ground, and Claiborne turned toward the crowd and yelled, “Did you catch the ball? Who won?” Later, coach Jason Garrett called Claiborne over for a talk to calm him down. Claiborne didn’t finish practice because of cramps, he said.
Cowboys Hall of Fame OL Larry Allen, who lives in California, was at practice Saturday.
WR Dez Bryant had a dropped pass in individual drills and in team drills.
RB DeMarco Murray had a rare fumble on the second play of team drills. LT Tyron Smith recovered the fumble near the line of scrimmage. Murray came right back with a nice run to the left, quickly getting into the secondary through a big hole.
WR Dwayne Harris dropped a deep pass down the left sideline that was perfectly thrown by QB Brandon Weeden. Harris beat CB B.W. Webb on the play-action pass. Harris also muffed the first kickoff of the evening practice. Coach Jason Garrett yelled at him, “Come on now.”
OT Darrion Weems had a false start in team drills and was replaced by another player.
RB Joseph Randle and RB Lance Dunbar had good runs early in team drills, both getting into the secondary before any contact.
DT Terrell McClain and DE Ben Bass stuffed run plays early in team drills.
DT Davon Coleman was active in team drills, often getting into the backfield to disrupt a play.
WR Cole Beasley made a diving catch over the middle in team drills from Tony Romo.
DE Martez Wilson would have sacked QB Brandon Weeden in team drills on a pass-rush from the right side.
DE Tyrone Crawford bull-rushed right through OT Jermey Parnell in 1-on-1 drills, knocking him on his butt.
LB Kyle Wilber used a nice spin move in 1-on-1 drills to beat RT Doug Free.
Rookie RG Zack Martin held his own in 1-on-1 drills against DT Henry Melton, though Melton beat him once.
Defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli yelled at DT Terrell McClain, “How about an inside move once?” after he was stuffed in a 1-on-1 drills.
WR Dezmon Briscoe beat a defender to get open but QB Dustin Vaughan’s pass was high, over his outstretched arms. In 1-on-1 drills, Briscoe beat CB Dashaun Phillips inside, and CBs coach Jerome Henderson yelled at Phillips, “You’re playing scared.”
WR Terrance Williams stayed late after practice to catch several passes from a ball machine.
In 1-on-1 drills, WR Chris Boyd made a great catch over CB Tyler Patmon, who had tight coverage, on a deep pass by QB Brandon Weeden down the left sideline. Later, Boyd beat Patmon again to get open but dropped the pass.
Before the evening practice, the Cowboys officially opened training camp in Oxnard with an opening ceremony that included a performance by Cowboys cheerleaders and remarks by owner Jerry Jones and Oxnard mayor Tim Flynn.
The Oxnard High School drum line also performed in the opening ceremony wearing Cowboys jerseys. Five had on Jason Witten No. 82 jerseys and four had on Dez Bryant No. 88 jerseys. No love for No. 9 Tony Romo.
In the morning special teams walk-through practice, special teams coordinator Rich Bisaccia had everyone on the line of scrimmage for punt defense drop to the ground in a push-up position. He then yelled, “What is the call?” several times, followed by, “I want to hear it.” Once he did, he told them, “Get the [expletive] up.” Later, he didn’t like the chatter, yelling, “Quit talking,” before giving more instruction.

Woah! That should've set Harris straight.
