Stanford OT Martin declares for 2012 draft
Posted on: January 3, 2012 6:19 pm

Stanford junior offensive tackle Jonathan Martin said he will enter the 2012 NFL Draft.

"I have decided to forgo my final year of eligibility and enter the NFL draft," Martin tweeted. "Thank you to everyone who has loved and supported me."

Martin is the No. 3-rated offensive tackle eligible for April’s draft, according to NFLDraftScout.com, behind only fellow juniors Matt Kalil from Southern California and Iowa’s Riley Reiff. Kalil has already said he’s entering the draft.

Martin is the No. 13-ranked overall prospect by NFLDraftScout.com, and 12th on Rob Rang’s Big Board. At 6-feet-6 and 305 pounds, Martin is known for his athleticism and considered a good fit for a zone-blocking scheme.

He was quarterback Andrew Luck’s blind-side protector and has the skills to remain on the left side in the NFL.

Luck and guard David DeCastro announced before the Fiesta Bowl that they intend to leave the Cardinal a year early for the NFL as well.

Iowa's Reiff third top OT to declare for draft

Iowa's Riley Reiff will enter the NFL Draft, becoming the third top-rated offensive tackle by NFLDraftScout.com to announce he is leaving school with a year of eligibility remaining.

He joins Southern California's Matt Kalil, who declared last month he was leaving for the NFL, and Stanford's Jonathan Martin, who made his announcement earlier Tuesday. All three are considered potential picks in the top half of the first round in April.

"Riley made his own decision," Reiff's mother, Jo, told the Des Moines Register. "We didn't help him out in any way. What he decided was OK with us.

"He finally came up with the decision."

Reiff, 6-feet-6 and 300 pounds, is the No. 5-rated overall prospect for 2012 by NFLDraftScout.com and is No. 10 on Rob Rang's Big Board. He has been a standout on the Hawkeyes' line since starting 11 of 13 games in 2009 while seeing time at left tackle, left guard and right tackle. He took the left tackle spot over fulltime in 2010, filling in for first-round pick Bryan Bulaga.

Iowa running back Marcus Coker had seven 100-yard rushing games in 2011, with Reiff leading the effort in the run blocking.

Unlike Bulaga, Reiff is considered a left tackle prospect in the NFL. He's athletic enough to stone speed rushers and plays with tenacity in the run game.

Meanwhile, running back Mika’il McCall, who was suspended for the final two games of the season, told the Register by text message that he will not be returning to the program.

South Carolina’s Alshon Jeffrey will enter the draft
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on January 5, 2012, 11:39 AM EST

Getty ImagesThe 2011 NFL Draft has added another likely first round wide receiver.

ESPN’s Joe Schad reports that South Carolina’s Alshon Jeffrey will declare for the draft. Jeffrey’s numbers declined dramatically in his junior season, but he had a huge 148-yard effort in his final bowl game.

He won the game’s MVP award despite getting kicked out for Jeffrey also got kicked out of the game.

Jeffrey has the size (6’4, 229-pound) to be a high pick in the first round if he enjoys a strong draft season.

Browns have the 4th pick. Sounds like they go offense.

I'd like to see them take RG3 and leave the Redskins reaching for a QB in round 2.

Especially with one of the first picks of the draft, why the hell would you ever tip your hand at all?

ASU QB Brock Osweiler is expected to declare for draft tomorrow. 6'8", good arm, and very good feet, he also had a full ride to play basketball at Gonzaga, he is ideal to come in and sit a few years and run the show down the road. I don't think he'll make it past the 3rd round.

OU's Landry Jones To Return For Senior Year

NORMAN, Okla. -- Landry Jones, the all-time leading passer in Oklahoma history, announced today that he will remain at OU and compete for the Sooners in his senior year.

“I want to accomplish the goals that I set before I got here, and there is still a lot more to do,” Jones said. “I want to make sure I’ve exhausted every effort in that area. And I want to be a senior. I enjoy being at OU and with my teammates and look forward to graduating with the guys that were in my class when I got here.”

The Artesia, NM, native said the NFL was a strong lure.

“That’s the ultimate goal for anyone who plays football,” Jones said. “I’ve thought about that since I was a little boy. It would be a great honor to play in the NFL and that goal will still be there when I finish at Oklahoma.”

With a relatively small senior class departing from the 2011 team, Jones likes the prospects for 2012.

“We hope to have another opportunity to make a title run,” he said. “Most of the offensive line returns and we have several receivers and backs return too. We’ve also got a lot of guys back on defense, so we’re confident that we can be a strong team.”

OU Head Coach Bob Stoops was pleased with Jones’ decision.

“We know the positive influence Landry has on and off the field with our team,” Stoops said. “We’re excited that he’s coming back to build on what has already been an outstanding career. We expect another great year from him, and like the fact that he’s determined to be even better.”

Jones, a finalist for the 2011 Manning Award, is OU’s all-time leading passer with 12,389 yards. He also tops the school’s career list with 93 touchdown passes. In all, Jones holds 21 records at Oklahoma, and is among the NCAA’s active career leaders in passing yards per game, passing yards, completions, touchdown passes and total yards.

Jones has played in 40 OU games with 37 starts. He has completed 1,021-of-1,628 passes (.627) with 41 interceptions against the 93 TDs.

Jones’ record as a starter is 30-8, including a 3-0 mark in bowls. He quarterbacked the 2009 team to the Big 12 Championship.

The 2011 OU team was 10-3 and finished the campaign with a 31-14 win over Iowa in the Insight Bowl at Tempe, Ariz.

I agree with Jones going back. His stock really suffered this year. Barkley going back makes no sense from a draft stand point. Too much risk, not enough reward. But it does put a lot of pre-season talent at the QB position going into next year. There's some QB's from the SEC that could come out next year as well. The kid at UGA is very good.

Va Tech RB Wilson to enter NFL draft

By JOHN RABY, AP Sports Writer
2 hours, 40 minutes ago

Virginia Tech running back David Wilson said Friday he’ll skip his senior season and enter the NFL draft.

Wilson made his announcement at a news conference in Blacksburg, Va., with Hokies coach Frank Beamer at his side.

The speedy Wilson rushed for 1,709 yards and nine TDs this season. The ACC player of the year was limited to 32 yards in the conference championship game loss to Clemson and ran for 82 yards in a Sugar Bowl loss to Michigan.

Wilson said he struggled with the decision and weighed the positives and negatives, including the risk of injury next season. He said he talked to former Virginia Tech running backs Ryan Williams and Kevin Jones about it.

“I had a great season this year,” Wilson said. “I felt like I built the legacy here to be remembered.

“This is something I really wanted to do. It’s been my goal since I was 8 and a dream of mine. Just to be that close to it and be able to get it and accomplish something that you work so hard for and sweat for every day, I couldn’t pass it up.”

Wilson was a second-team all-American selection by The Associated Press. He also was an All-American in the triple jump last spring.

Wilson said the NFL’s draft advisory board projects him as a second-round pick and he believes he can improve his status at the NFL combine. He said he plans to hire an agent in the coming weeks, and the history major from Danville hopes to return to Virginia Tech at some point to finish his degree.

Wilson said his teammates took the news of his departure well because many of them had been talking since the preseason that this could be his last season.

“We want to thank David and family for just so many great memories here at Virginia Tech,” Beamer said. “What a wonderful player, but more so, a wonderful person. Great character. Great enthusiasm. (He) just has meant so much to Virginia Tech football. This was the beginning here and it’s going to continue on. We’re proud that Virginia Tech has been part of it.”

Wilson said Wisconsin running back Montee Ball’s announcement Thursday to return next fall didn’t guide his choice to leave.

“Other people’s decisions don’t have an influence on me,” Wilson said. “I stayed focused on what’s best for me and what I need to do.”

Wilson is the second Hokies player this week to announce an early exit. Cornerback Jayron Hosley said after the Sugar Bowl he’ll forego his senior season. Hosley had nine interceptions in 2010 and a career-best 59 tackles and three interceptions this season.

@ @Sheesh1097 @PSLToFlushing I spoke with scouts about Jenkins and it wasn't glowing. They will need a CB but a OG too. Who graded higher key.

No sense? Lets see...

He gets to become more polished before entering the pro's
He gets to bone every hot USC chick on campus
He's already making a lot of money
He will be the first QB off the board next year
