DETROIT (AP) — General Motors is recalling more than 400,000 pickup trucks in the U.S. because the side air bags can explode without warning and spew parts into the cabin.

The recall covers certain 2015 and 2016 Chevrolet and GMC Sierra 1500, 2500, and 3500 trucks.

Documents posted Friday by U.S. safety regulators say the air bag inflator can rupture or the end cap can fly off on both sides of the trucks. Documents say three inflators ruptured in 2015 Silverados last month, one in Florida and two in Texas. All three trucks were unoccupied at the time, and GM says it has no reports of injuries..

The company says a manufacturing defect allowed moisture into the inflator while it was being manufactured, causing corrosion. The inflators were made in Mexico by Joyson Safety Systems.

The automaker Hyundai is recalling nearly 240,000 cars in the U.S. because the seat belt pretensioners can explode and injure people in the car. So far three injuries have been reported, two in the U.S. and one in Singapore.

In a letter to Hyundai, government regulators said that the driver's and front passenger's seat belt pretensioners can explode upon deployment and send shrapnel throughout the vehicle. Pretensioners tighten the belts in preparation for a crash.

The recall, which expands and replaces three previous recalls, includes 2019-2022 Accents, 2021-2023 Elantras and 2021-2022 Elantra HEVs, or hybrid electric vehicles. Vehicles repaired under the previous recalls will need to be taken back to dealerships for the new remedy.

I think the manufacturers use these recalls to help their dealers make more money. You bring you car in for a recall repair and the next thing you know you are paying for a $1400 brake job.

Locally, towing companies have a custom made container for EVs that looks like a construction roll-off dumpster. One end opens fully and the EV is pushed inside and the end is closed up. This container is water tight and in the event of battery fire, is filled with water. Submerging these EV batteries is the only way to put them out but what happens is the battery continues to burn, boiling the water! Eventually it finally burns out.
