International piracy laws do allow the use of force by any state in defense of its own security. It is not that hard to show that trafficking drugs is harmful to the US.

If this really piracy? Not exactly, but I think the principle of defense of security still applies. I don't understand why killings everyone in these boats is the right option if taking and holding these boats is possible, but clearly this is a show of force.

One thing that concerns me is these attacks are killing low level mules and not the ring-leaders of the cartels. I don't know how effective it will be in the long run.
