This tweet got me thinking: Is Murray another Julius Jones?

DeMarco Murray had a 4-game stretch in 2011 where he went for 801 yards on 75 carries (8.01 YPC). His other 19 career games: 250-959 (3.84).

----

I don't remember the numbers, but I do remember a lot of people annointing Julius after had had a string of like three good games his rookie year. 150 yards and almost 200 yards back to back. That, and everytime he played Seattle he went off.

Do we overrated Murray because he ate the Rams lunch then had good games against bad Rams and Bills fans?

Murray is definitely entering "put up or shut up" territory. Ten bucks says Jerry gives him a multi-million-$ extension without him playing a full season.

Maybe. People do forget (or never acknowledged) that Rams defense and really entire team was historically bad. Awful.

I do think Murray is good, but he was hurt a lot in college even before he bulked up and started trying to steamroll everyone, so I don't expect him to ever stay healthy at this level if we try to give him a lot of carries.

Not the worst thing in the world, just means you better have a competent backup ready. Murray's not the first RB who was hurt a lot.

I think he's much more talented than julious but he hasn't proved anything but being brittle

Not sure he is more talented than Julius, but he is tenacious...and other than health, would rather have a tenacious runner who can gore a defense at even the most limited speed or quickness. Pun intended.

There's no way Murray is another Julius Jones. I haven't seen him run into the backs of his lineman once.

Not sure about this. Most of those guys are on their assess immediately after the snap so he doesn't have the chance to line one up the way Julius would.

I think he was anointed by many way to early.

True. Murray has had crap for lines.

I'm interested in seeing how Randle plays in comparison to Murray.

One thing I noticed during draft time... Randle was often compared to Murray, before we even took him. Some even called him a clone.

Which kind of makes him going in the 5th interesting.

Do teams not think highly of Murray?

I don't think anyone values Murray nearly as much as our fans. He's a good back, but hardly irreplaceable.

WTF was Free doing out there? Just going from one person to the next holding. 99% of the time that run is getting called back.

Murray is the type of back that will give you positive runs as long as there is a crease for him, with the occasional highlight romp down the field.

He's the classic case of dime a dozen franchise RB that this league is now full of.

In the past, when Murray was injured, it has clearly hurt the Cowboys.

But it isn't that Murray is somehow a great running back who cannot be replaced. It's more that Murray is a good back and his backups have been marginal.

I'm very interested to see what Joseph Randle will do.

I think Randle has a great chance of being an important contributor to the offense. He's supposed to be solid in pass protection and as a receiver out of the backfield. He runs well too. He doesn't have the measurables of a great running back, so it is highly unlikely that he'll ever become one, but he could be just the right player to share time with Murray.

If the offense doesn't lose much when Murray is out and Randle is in the game, that's a significant upgrade for this team.

I don't think Murray is another Julius Jones. I'm hoping that Randle is another Murray.
