Shopping list for Garrett's football players.

1. Good
2. Unbelievable intangibles off the field.
3. Talent.
4. Good qualities that "go with" a football related workout.

I just can't believe that Stephen Jones is buying this stupidity.

“The thing about Byron is he had a lot of other things that went with him,” Stephen Jones said. “He’s a good football player and he had unbelievable intangibles off the field. Did the combine help him? Of course it did. But he had a lot of good qualities that went with it.”

Jones was a great pick. Looked really good last year.

What's the complaint here?

It's not about Byron Jones, I'm psyched that he turned out the way he did. My issue is the apparent reasoning that goes into what they are looking for. Why would intangibles off the field matter?

Jones was OK but certainly not great. He had 0 INT's last year so hopefully he'll improve.
I don't expect any rookie CB/S to be "great" especially with no pass rush to speak of. The kid's got plenty of room to improve though that is true. But so far he looks like a keeper.

Yeah, Jones isn't the best example because he's the rare one who had great athletic ability and great smarts/character (as far as we know).

But it's funny hearing the Musers' heads explode about Garrett's stammering around about Hardy at the Combine yesterday. He says Hardy did things off the field that were detrimental, but then says we haven't decided whether to bring him back or not because we haven't made decisions on players yet... even though Steve the same day said we definitely want McClain and Claiborne back.

Then Garrett later says the evaluation of a player starts with character. Really? Then why were Hardy and Gregory and Randle and Josh Brent here? Truth is, we've had more questionable character players under Garrett than under Phillips or Parcells.

I think this is Jason's passive-aggressive way of telling everyone he didn't want Hardy, but instead of making a stand with Jerry, he sits and takes it like a good employee and complains like this later if things don't work out. Dez had massive character questions also but has worked out, and I doubt Jason would ever admit to having doubts about wanting Dez here.

And again, Garrett just signed an extension here, so he can't complain about how the chain of command works here. He knew it better than anyone and just signed up for five more years.

Garrett's press interactions at the combine are frustrating to watch. Very dull.

Reading between the lines, I also thought Garrett responses suggested that he isn't interested in re-signing Hardy.

As a fan, it sucks that Garrett isn't any better with the press. I miss the Parcells days.

He just sounds like a fraud company man who is more focused on saying the "right things."

Because IMO there's been way too many philosophical changes and contradicting actions vs messages for him to have an actual belief system or coaching ideology that he believes in.

I'm a Jones fan but we probably should have taken Damarious Randall (3 picks later) or Ronald Darby (23 picks later) over him.

Randall had 58 tackles (53 solo), 14 passes defended, 3 INT and a TD.
Darby had 68 tackles (61 solo) , 21 passes defended, 2 INT.

Byron had 66 tackles (47 solo), 8 passes defended, 0 INT.

Both Randall and Darby are legit #1 CB's, Jones is maybe a CB , maybe a S.

wasn't impressed with Jones down the stretch, where he was outclassed as a CB, blew the Jets game while giving up a long TD vs the Skins in WK 17. room for improvement.

Exactly.

Dale Hansen called it when Hardy was signed in the first place: Either he doesn't believe nearly as much in character as he claims, or he's a Jones family puppet. It's that simple.

Back to Jones... I guess I wasn't as impressed with him as most people. I'm still not sure he wouldn't make a better corner than safety. He is a great athlete and he's big enough to tackle (and willing, unlike Mo). And to me, safety is one of those positions where great instincts are more important than great athleticism, and I haven't seen him show that. I hope the decision to bring back Mo doesn't have any impact on where they decided to put Jones.

Lets see how they compare in another year or two...neither of the guys you listed had to be moved around to a new position every other week

Hopefully they let Jones stay at one position all year this year

Of course there is, he's a rookie.

He definitely got set back a little by having to move around the defense so much though. It was never intended for him to be a fulltime CB last year. The role he was playing early in the year was what they intended for him all season, but due to injuries he had to move, and move quite a bit.

Pretty sure Stevie said this week the plan (now anyway) is to play Jones at FS, which is what they envisioned when they drafted him last year.

That said, I don't think anything they do with Claiborne should have any impact on what they do with Jones. Claiborne should only be kept with the idea that he can compete for a spot. He shouldn't be counted on as a starter at all.
