The New Orleans Saints have signed former Dallas Cowboys defensive end Anthony Spencer to a one-year deal according to neworleanssaints.com. "So (expletive) glad to be away from Garrett" Spencer was quoted as saying.
The signing will reunite the 31-year-old Spencer with his former defensive coordinator Rob Ryan. Spencer was stellar in the two seasons that Ryan headed up the defense for the Cowboys. In 2011 and 2012, Spencer played in 30 games and recorded 17 sacks and six forced fumbles and earned the franchise tag from the Cowboys before both the 2012 and 2013 seasons as a result.
Unfortunately, Spencer has never been the same since undergoing microfracture surgery in 2013. He played only one game for the Cowboys that season before having the surgery and has only 0.5 sacks in his last 14 games. The Saints are hoping that further recovery time and a return to Ryan's defensive scheme will rejuvenate Spencer's career. He will add some depth the an extremely thin corps of outside pash rushers in New Orleans.
