Ron Leary can play now, might need microfracture surgery in future

According to a Cowboys source, the concern with undrafted free agent guard Ron Leary is that he has something his knee that if it pops could force him to have possible career ending microfracture surgery.

They believe the knee will hold up in the short term but the negative long-term prognosis is why the Memphis product went from a possible third round prospect to undrafted.

The Cowboys have been high on him since taking him through a private work out at the school and believe they not only signed an undrafted free agent who could make the team but who could also compete for a starting job.

Despite the chronic knee problem, Leary was consistent and reliable in college at Memphis, not to mention
versatile. He started 36 straight games to end his career. As a senior in 2011, he started the first six games at left tackle and then the final six at right guard. He was recognized as the Co-MVP of the team, which is quite an honor for an offensive lineman.

"The issue for him is how long [he can play], it's not now. It's how long he can play," an ecstatic Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said of Leary. "That's why he fell the way he fell. We had our coach think he might be the readiest of any [drafted] offensive linemen."

Leary is better than DeCastro.

According to our front office.

But this team is in good hands.

I don't think that's what they meant by it. It would kinda be like saying Weeden is more ready to play right now than RGIII. He might be. But we all know RGIII has light years more talent and upside.

I think he has surpassed AL Davis.

At least Al always wanted speed.

Jerry just says crazy things at will now and changes philosophies every 2 years. Now we are on the "Captain" kick, a few years back we wanted proven kids from major programs.

DeCastro was widely declared as draft and instant starter. Similar to Luck.

But our staff liked Leary better. Hes the mostest readiest.

It doesn't say they liked Leary over DeCastro. Or Zietler. Or Glenn. Or hell. More than Kalil, Reiff, etc... After all, it said Olinemen, not just guards. Just that they thought he might be the most ready to step in and play. In another article, it said they had a 3rd round grade on him initially. And considered taking him with the 5th, but decided against it because of the injury. I really doubt he had the highest grade of all the Olinemen in the draft.

And again, just because they say he is the most ready, doesn't mean the best. To use a baseball example, if you had a guy that could hit .280 right out of the gate, but would probably always be at that level, would you take him over a guy that would hit .260 at first, but will blossom into a .300 hitter? No. But the .280 guy is more ready to hit major league pitching RIGHT NOW.

Anyways, as I was saying... I can't fucking believe Jerry thinks Ron Leary has the potential to be better than Larry Allen.

For Chrissakes we're screwed.

I would have been better than Larry Allen had I not blew my knee out.

I don't doubt they actually believe that.

I doubt if they have any a complete brain amongst the group to arrive at that conclusion.

I ddin't know microfracture surgery was career-ending.

In some cases it could be. I would think it'd be much more of a bigger deal for someone that played at the skilled positions like WR, TE, DB, LB, and RB as opposed to an interior OL.

Yet several NBA players have that surgery and continue on with their careers....
