According to @spotrac, the cap hit on Doug Free would be nearly $13m if they release him after this season. Huge hit.

Yeah, he's your starting RT in 2013.

christ.

someone get him in the gym. If I have to see him get driven straight back into Romo one more time.

He plays scared and with no leverage. He just sits back and waits for his guy and hopes he doesn't get tricked. Then he's on his heels and he needs a few jump stops to stop the ends momentum.

I would hire someone to stay on top of Free’s ass 24/7. He wouldn’t be able to take shit without thinking about his technique.

Don't care.

If we don't release him, then we'll have a cap hit somewhere down the line when he finally does get released. It's either that or we watch him screw up until his contract is done.

Jerry's not going to let him ride the bench and pay him that much.

What does it matter? Jerry's not going to release him for that cap hit and he's not going to let him be benched. :Emo

I'm not sure where they are getting their numbers unless they are for some reason counting his 2012 season (now) which wouldn't matter since this season would be over if we cut him in the off-season.

I don't have access to roster bonuses or player incentives but nothing I can find shows Free has hit any of those yet.

By my math, cutting him this off-season would create an accelerated signing bonus hit of $8,350,0000. This is dead money. Not an additional penny goes to Doug Free.

His 2013 salary cap hit if he is on the team would be $11,175,000. So cutting him would create (11,175,000-8,350,000) $2,825,000 in additional cap room. Yes, it's dead money but again, you aren't paying additional salary to money to a player who is underperforming. Also, keeping him means Jerry writes out a check for $7,000,000 to Doug Free, his 2013 base salary.

So, your choices are:
keeping an awful Doug Free, taking a $11.175M cap hit for him, and paying him $7M in real money

OR

releasing him, take a (dead money) cap hit of $8.35M, freeing up an additional $2.825M in room, and not paying him another dime.

Didn't sound right. I thought only 8M remained of the guaranteed money.

Good stuff cmd, Spurm fucked it up.

I've been talking to him on twitter. I think he saw the 2012 restructure bonus of $4.8M and thinking that gets added on at the end.

the $4.8 restructure bonus is paid at the time and the cap hit is spread out over the remaining years of the contract, which was 3 years (2012, 2013, and 2014). That drove up his pro-rated bonus hit from $2.575M to $4.175M. After this season, he has 2 years left.

@cmd34 @SportsSturm He's right, our bad. We were adding in the restructure bonus twice. #earlymorningmath $8.35M is the official dead money

I'm interested in hearing more about this shitting technique you speak of...

One thing is he never gets his arms extended anymore. He relies on trying to block them with his body which is against all technique learned in blocking 101. He needs more mobility with his feet. He is slow off the ball (which is why he false starts so much). And he has apparently gotten weak.
