Jerry Jones: Rob Ryan’s defense is “too much scheme”
Posted by Michael David Smith on February 26, 2013, 6:36 AM EST

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones says Rob Ryan, who was fired as defensive coordinator last month, ran a defense that was too complicated.

Jones said at the Scouting Combine that the decision to fire Ryan and hire Monte Kiffin was made in large part because Dallas needs a simpler defense with a slimmer playbook.

“Where we fundamentally came down with Rob is that his philosophy is about multiple scheme,” Jones said, via the Star-Telegram. “I think you have to skinny it down. Philosophically, I don’t think Rob believes in that.”

Jones said he expressed his concerns to Ryan a year ago, and that Ryan did try to simplify his defense — just not enough to satisfy Jones.

“I think Rob will tell you we had long visits about this in the off-season last year that there was too much scheme. He tried to cut it back and he did skinny it back, but it’s still a lot,” Jones said. “We just didn’t feel like at the end of the day Rob could skinny it back enough to our satisfaction that we could make plays.”

So Kiffin will come in and run a defense that’s simpler. And maybe better.

I think lack of organization skills and wanting to do too much is what is keeping Rob Ryan from being a great defensive coach.

Trust me: there will be a few times next year when we either have 12 or 10 men on the field.

Maybe, but I highly doubt it'll be anywhere near as much as it was the past two seasons. Hell one play last year we only had 9 guys on the field and got bailed out when the other team called timeout.

I've never seen a defense as disorganized as Ryan's was here. Nobody knew who was supposed to be on the field or where to line up far too many times.

Watch. The defense will be blessed in terms of injuries, have all the starters for an entire season and when the defense looks organized people will defend Jerry to the bitter end because he "got it right".

Nevermind the fact that the team had about 3-4 street free agents playing on less than a week of practice at different points in the year, the scheme was the problem.

Hey Jerry, you don't have to keep trying to convince people you know what you are doing. Stop trying to sell people on the Rob firing because the more you point to scheme and the lack of organization, the more your stuffing your foot in your mouth by accepting the exact same thing on the offensive side of the ball.

.

Yeah, this would be a fine excuse for fat Rob except even when the regulars have been out there on the field during his two years, they looked disorganized and couldnt get lined up right either.

The defense early in the year was pretty good. It bailed out the O in couple of games when they couldn't get out of their own way.

The offesne sucked and put them in a lot of bad positions but even early they were just mediocre. The points and yards they gave up are what they are. At the end of the year though I would say only the Rams were worse.
