He was a decent 4-3 end in college. Was playing somewhat out of position last year. Returning to his natural position/playing weight.
Next year will be year 3. Ideal to replace an aging expensive player with a younger third year guy. Of course, you're counting on Crawford to show something this year. If not, you replace Spencer with a probable first round DE draft pick.
I just haven't seen anything to lead me to believe he would be a good starting end. I'm not saying he was a terrible pick, because as a mid-rounder if you contribute as a backup in spots that's fine... Kind of like Hatcher. But as a starter at end? I don't know right now. Sure, that changes if he shows a lot this year.
The real story here is Mid missing a valuable opportunity to blame this on our cap woes.
It may or may not be cap related. It very well could be.
I'm hoping we're just being fiscally responsible and not handing big money to an aging player who, quite frankly, has been fairly inconsistant up until this point.
