Spencer wanted 8mil a year.

Cowboys wanted 5mil a year.

Amigoprops to the team for showing fiscal responsibility here.

I'd rather pay him 11 mil this year and be done with it than be tied to him for a number of years as he gets older.

If he plays like he did last year, he'll be well worth that 11 mil.

And it'll give Crawford one more year of experience and then let him roll over to a starting spot next season.

I do think Crawford is way prematurely anointed by a lot of people. I don't see why some are so sold on him.

Who's annointed him anything?

He was a decent 4-3 end in college. Was playing somewhat out of position last year. Returning to his natural position/playing weight.

Next year will be year 3. Ideal to replace an aging expensive player with a younger third year guy. Of course, you're counting on Crawford to show something this year. If not, you replace Spencer with a probable first round DE draft pick.

I just haven't seen anything to lead me to believe he would be a good starting end. I'm not saying he was a terrible pick, because as a mid-rounder if you contribute as a backup in spots that's fine... Kind of like Hatcher. But as a starter at end? I don't know right now. Sure, that changes if he shows a lot this year.

The real story here is Mid missing a valuable opportunity to blame this on our cap woes.

It may or may not be cap related. It very well could be.

I'm hoping we're just being fiscally responsible and not handing big money to an aging player who, quite frankly, has been fairly inconsistant up until this point.

I just love that this organization slaps an 11 million dollar "franchise" tag on a player most of us feel is average.
