MacMahon: Jogging Miles Austin avoids accountability

Jogging Miles Austin avoids accountability
October, 16, 2012

By Tim MacMahon | ESPNDallas.com

IRVING, Texas – The minimum-wage receiver owned up to the inexcusable gaffe of not hustling back to the line of scrimmage with the game on the line.

The $54 million receiver who did the same thing just shirked responsibility the day after the Cowboys’ clock-management crisis played a critical role in their loss to the Ravens.

“Coach’ll handle that,” Miles Austin said when repeatedly asked for an explanation of why he jogged back to the line of scrimmage like it was the middle of the fifth day of practice in Oxnard, Calif., instead of the end of a Week 5 game in Baltimore.

Austin, a nonfactor against the Ravens with only two catches for 31 yards, said he’d talk to the media on Friday. That’s standard for Austin, whose sole goal with the media is to say nothing of interest, but it’s far from routine when Tony Dungy is ripping him on NBC for an epic failure to hustle.

Gee, can’t wait to hear Austin say over and over again that the Cowboys are just moving forward and focusing on the Panthers.

At least Kevin Ogletree stood up and accepted blame for an unfathomable lack of urgency during a potential game-winning drive.

“I know that’s my job to get there and get to the line,” Ogletree said. “I know Miles and I both feel bad about what happened, because we know the outcome. We know we missed the field goal and how close that was and how precious yardage was at the end of the day.”

Coach Jason Garrett said the problem started with his play call, pointing out that it wasn’t wise to have Austin and Ogletree run vertical routes if the Cowboys wanted to clock the ball after the play. Garrett also cited poor communication as part of the problem.

Why would veteran NFL receivers need to be told to hustle in the final 20 seconds of a comeback attempt? That’s something every Pee Wee player should understand.

“Trust me, we talked to them about that and the urgency they need to have,” Garrett said. “We have to do a better job in that situation. It starts with me, and hopefully when we’re in a similar situation in the future, we’ll get it done better.”

If not, Austin could at least accept some responsibility for his role in the debacle.

He definitely took the money and mailed it in.

Absolute bullshit what happened on Sunday.

The real answer is it's looking like two plays were never called. Look at it, no one hustles back, not just the WRs.

That's probably why he didn't want to say anything. Instead of avoiding accountability, there's a good chance he's actually refusing to throw his coach under the bus.

I'm really getting sick of our good players getting trashed when it's the coach who is to blame.

broaddus said it yesterday, they put it all on one play and were going to figure it out from there.

dez didnt break the tackle and we saw what happened.

Fucking genius. And then instead of calling a timeout they just watched as the clock ran out.

I tend to agree with you here

Can you imagine what Tom Coughlin's reaction would have been if he witnessed such a display from his team? His face would look like an apple.

It's like everybody assumed someone else would fuck it up so no one bothered to get to the line.
Technically you could spike that in like 5 seconds if they busted their ass, but no one wants to bust their ass.

I thought that last night when Norv/Rivers was answering questions.

I was like ffs why do we do this? These guys just lost a heartbreaking game why make them talk about it?

Holy cow, watching the all 22 of the final play, I just realized the safety blitzed Austin ran right past the corner covering him....

If romo just floats it to Austin game over Td...

Man that is as painful as watching lve when it happened. Austin was gone..corner was not even looking back.

Have to say romo must have not been able to see down the field or he panicked......

Geez. Why the hell do I care so much about this?

Media members mad that players making their jobs harder.

So sad.

Hos, is that you?

Yes, believe it or not, the media and the fans want answers as to why Dallas screwed up the last minute of the game. Shocking, I know. Garrett says he preaches accountability? Well that includes facing the heat and answering legitimate questions when things go sour.

The new guy who took over from Broaddus on 103.3 said today it was a blitz and Dez was the hot route... Basically that Tony and everyone did just what they were supposed to do there.

I guess I'm saying that with them sending people, it may have been too hard for him to see that and get the ball downfield.

no question, they brought everybody but the 3 corners and the one safety. Cant take a sack there so romo has no choice but to throw it to dez.....broaddus is saying the throw should have been in front of dez a little more, but it seems to me if it was it could have been picked or batted down...

man half a step more time and romo can hit austin for the finish.

here is what it looked like

Pre snap end zone view. looks like a straight up 3-4
final-play-pre-snap-endzone.jpg

here it is from the sideline, safety wandering around by the corner trying not to give away the blitz.
final-play-pre-snap2-web.jpg

then the ball is snapped, safety blitzes witten runs the dig, austin and ogletree run go's, romo sees 7 coming
final-play-ball-snapped-web.jpg

From the endzone you see romo seemingly has some time but throws the slant to dez, some pressure inside..not much though
final-play-ball-thrown-endz.jpg

here it is from the sideline, if dez gets free he is gone, if the ball is thrown to austin its six.

and finally the endzone view of dez getting tackled, austin is blowing by his guy if romo waits or had more time.

I think everyone on the team just assumed they would use the Time Out and therefore there was no big rush to get back.
