New Cowboys defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin hasn’t had much of a chance to work with his players yet.

But he’s sent out word about what they need to study.

Both defensive lineman Jason Hatcher and cornerback Brandon Carr said during radio interviews on KRLD-FM (via the Dallas Morning News) that Kiffin had told them to watch tape of the Seahawks from this past season for clues about the new 4-3 system he’s installing.

“I kind of asked him what our philosophy and what the look of our defense was going to be, and as a prime example he said, ‘Go see Seattle film and you’ll probably learn a lot from those guys and just watch how they move on the field.’” Carr said. “That’s some homework for me to do for the next couple of weeks.”

The Seahawks led the league in scoring defense at 15.3 points per game and were fourth in yards allowed at 306.2 last season (compared to 25.0 and 355.4 per game for the Cowboys), making them a good example to learn from.

Of course, Kiffin could have as easily suggested his old Buccaneers defenses, but it’s probably easier for this generation of players to find high definition video of last year’s Seahawks.

Gus Bradley was the Seattle DC, worked under Kiffin in Tampa

In fact some thought Marinelli might be going to Jacksonville at one point to be Bradley's DC because of the ties together.

Carroll is a Kiffin(Tampa 2) disciple so it makes sense. We better get some safeties that can A) keep plays in front of them and B)fly to the ball. We currently have none of those on our roster.

Seahawks had 3 LB's that can fly to the ball too. Bruce Carter? Definitely. Sean Lee? Yep. Alex Albright? XXX

no matter what kind of system we want to run defensively, we are missing players...so that doesn't matter.

True, but forcing a square peg(Albright) into a round hole (Tampa 2 OLB) is a horrible strategy. It's one thing if he has to play there due to injuries but to go into the season with that as the plan (hopefully it isn't) is the kind of decision that keeps this franchise floating around 500.

Vaccaro, Cyprien, Elam or Thomas. One of those safeties would fit the bill.

Yeah there's this new thing called the draft and free agency where we might be able to find another OLB.

Agreed. We just have so many holes and limited resources (6 picks and being over the cap) this year. I fear we are going to go cheap at way too many positions this year.

Sounds like a lazy response to the players. Go study the scheme that got bounced in the playoffs giving up 30 points to Atlanta. Cowboys D did a better job earlier in the season of only giving up 19 points.

In case you arnt aware, coaches have only limited contact now with players for alot of the offseason thanks to new CBA

I concur.
As long as the Jones cabal thinks the Cowboys are just one player/coach away from being serious contenders this will never change.
We have some good players. No where near enough though.

the strongside OLB is one of the spots they can go cheap on

It's weird last year for some reason I spent some time reading about Seattle knowing we were playing them.

If u do some searching u will see going back to the mini camps Carroll was stressing he wanted to play defense like he ran it in sf in 95 and 96.

that wasn't a cover two.

I imagine it's a mixture in reality.

Their DC was a Kiffin disciple Theebs

I know that, but there head coach was not and he is a 34 defensive guy himself.

Look it up, he spent the offseason saying he wanted to play like his niners teams did on defense.

Carroll ran the 4-3 his entire time at SC and is a self-admitted Kiffin disciple.

USC always ran 4-3 defenses, and so has Seattle since he started coaching there
